As bad as Dier can be I'd still have him starting ahead of Sanchez, Tanganga and Rodon, personally. In an ideal world Dier would be one of the first on the list to go but those three need to go before him IMO.

Dier can certainly make mistakes but I think you have more of a capability to not notice that he's there if the team is playing really well, more so than if Sanchez or Tanganga in particular were on the pitch as sometimes everything they do can feel shaky and panicky.

One thing's for sure though, he can't be considered to be anything more than backup, and ideally 4th choice.
Exactly... and that's our problem. We don't have a defence. Dier should never be among the first to be in the starting 11... not anymore... but we have 4-5 defenders we can't use. They don't have enough quality or talent. And they can't do what they are supposed to do - DEFEND 🤷‍♂️

And this has nothing to do with coaching. Because we have had 3-4 managers trying to teach them already.

One of the first to be replaced. Such an inflated perception of how good is one of the root causes of our total clusterfuck of a defence. For Romero to learn and develop, we need some experience in the back line; otherwise, it is the blind leading the blind. Last few weeks his been at fault for so many goals, giving the ball away etc, he would have been dropped in literally any other team.

I think he also gets away with murder because of his status within the squad; speaks Portuguese, nice, intelligent guy by all accounts and is a leader and part of the committee thing.

For me, there are similarities with Michael Dawson.

A good guy who tries to be a leader and he tries while never appearing to complain. But ultimately he's not good enough.

Dawson left at a time when we could all look back and look at his time here positively. If Dier stays longer then fans will just get pissed off with him.

it's not just the fact he's not good enough, giving him a new contract sends all the wrong messages as surely it's not just us who facepalm every time he fucks up. no wonder the team/squad is so broken, i doubt there's any harmony at all left now.

Yep, it's that whole reward of mediocrity that sets the bar for the standards we expect. I hope its all bullshit, and as people have mentioned, NO contracts, transfers etc should even be thought about without a manager, let alone a DOF... apart from conning H into an extension

Fans and managers love the idea of Dier and for some reason back him despite him playing a leading part this mediocre dog show. I'm glad that fans are finally starting to give him the stick he deserves.

It’s time to move on and there is no place for anything sentimental on the road we need to take as a club. Dier isn’t the only one who needs to be show in the door but that discussion is for the Painful Rebuild and Levy out threads.

Anyway, just my two cents.
think most fans agree he is shit

No contracts should be offered to any player until a new DOF and coach arrive.

They need to make that call

For me I have warmer feeling towards Dawson than Dier, not sure why, just felt like Daws new his limitations as a player, whilst Dier thinks his the shit, I'm tired of seeing those shitty long balls he plays to no one like his prime pirlo

I agree that I find Dawson more likeable and i'll certainly remember him with more fondness than Dier.

I'm not convinced Dier does think he's the shit. I think he's a guy who gives his all and tried to get to the top. You probably need a bit of that to survive in the Prem.

So I've no ill feelings towards Dier.

He was the back up and now hes the main man. He should be a rotation option for a club at this level not one of the first names on the team sheet.

Just shows what an absolute shitshow our squad is in when you potentially have to go through 2/3/4 worse Central Defenders before you even get to Dier

That still takes nothing away from the fact that Dier should not be a starting CB for us nor should he have been for years!

Disgraceful mismanagement and lack of joined up thinking from our club

Absolute 🤡

Recruiting has been a huge problem in recent years, all the players bought to succeed our big names of recent times have been terrible. Sanchez, Foyth & Rodon were all brought in to be long-term players and none of them have even come close to replacing Toby or Jan. Then there's Aurier, Sissoko, Lo Celso, Ndombele, Reguilon, Doherty, Sessegnon. None of them have proven adequate to replace the likes of Dembele, Eriksen, Trippier, Walker or Rose.

Something which gave me serious pause when it came to wanting Poch back is that a lot of those players are ones that came in post-Mitchell, when he was supposedly more hands-on with transfers.

All roads seem to lead back to Mitchell

Seems to be absolute top quality…

Dier is a worse player in a back 5 because it has actually accommodated his weaknesses - for an experienced player his confidence levels are laughable and he defends by getting loosely into a comfortable position and then that's about it - no one goes tight in the Spurs back line its based on dropping off and giving the opposition the run of the park but Dier has taken it to another level though Lenglet isnt far behind -

Dier I think has had a poor season amongst many others but Conte praised him and Southgate picked him for England and he is still not our worst defender which should speak volumes - the back line needs to be four and we need to sign a leader with some experience is Naybet available
