Because our squad is not good enough depth wise = finishing fifth (and a repeat of this season)

I know this is optimistic but I'll say it anyway. If we get the right signings next year then this will be achievable. Fully agree that our squad this year wasn't good enough depth wise for it, but next year could be different.

We should aim for both league and fa cups.

This comp should get the attention uefa give it.

Sick of Sundays and it will ruin our season (again)

We have a squad clearly strong enough to put out a strong side in this competition without using key players...assuming there's no sales

------------friedel

naugton-Dawson-Caulker-Fryers

----Sigurdsson-holtby-Carrol

Townsend---defoe--Dempsey

with development players on the bench that has got to be strong enough to get through the muck you come up against in the early rounds

We should be putting out a mostly second string in this in the group stages. We need to keep the squad fresh. Carroll, Townsend, Smith etc. should be in the team getting 90 minutes every game.

There is no doubt that we performed way better in weekend matches when there was no midweek Europa game. Our worst result of the season was losing at home to Fulham which I seem to remember was just after the dire second leg including extra time against Inter Milan. It is such an arduous competition to win and it's usually the CL drop outs that win it having played less than half of a team reaching the final right from the qualifying stage.
It's a ridiculous competition and would only be worth playing our better players if there were no CL drop outs, if the winners of the EL got to play in the CL and if we had enough depth in our squad. Or if it was a knockout competition with no tedious group matches. The only marginal benefit I can see in it is that we might be able to attract some players ( not the very top ones ) with European football rather than none. Otherwise play the kids for experience and get it over with.

I have no problem with using our squad depth for the Europa League,
a lot of the younger players are more than good enough to compete against decent european teams,
but it's important that we focus on the EL when it's the next game.
Not so much what players we use, but that we prepare well for the games with a professional attitude,
and that we don't have to listen to shit head players saying no one care about the tournament.
Just putting 7 kids and 4 back up players in a team, not prepare them for the opposition,
and give them the impression that it doesn't matter if they win or not isn't good enough.
Someone lacking game time in the league should be desperate to prove himself in a EL game - if not, then it's time to sell.

Could not disagree with this thread more.

Fair enough UEFA have ruined this competition, making a shadow of its former self but at the end of the day Spurs should never enter a competition without the intention of ultimately winningit. To quote Mr Blanchflower: 'the game is about glory' not finishing fourth and never winning trophies however 'beneath' us they may be.

If you're going to have clubs that dropped from the CL come into the fold, why on Earth does the winner not receive an automatic bid into the CL? Even if they have to go through the preliminary rounds prior to group stages it makes sense to have that as a part of the "winnings."

It'd get every team in it more interested and as a result they'd have much higher quality of performances. Can you imagine if we knew that winning the EL would equate to being in CL on some level? You've got to think our guys would have played like their hair was on fire. Not just going through the motions and hoping for a trophy at the end of the long, arduous road.

I think barely missing out on 4th should make us appreciate the possibility of winning a trophy in the Europa league more. If we'd done a little better in that comp we might be lifting a trophy tomorrow night and I guarantee that we would barely give a fuck that Arsenal had just beaten Wigan if we could be winning a European title. I don't want us to be like Arsenal, making the Champions league qualification their annual trophy but doing fuck all in the actual competition.

Well for me the Europa Cup this season meant something. I was so pleased we took the competition seriously and if things go against us come the last game of the season for Champions league position we should take the Europa Cup seriously once again.

Totthenham winning any trophy is good.

If we're in it, we should be in it to win it.

I would agree IF we could 'comfortably' do as Chelsea have done (12 finals in 10 seasons), due to their excellent depth of strength and quality.

We are struggling qualify for our seasons major target, again.

I then believe strongly concentrate on our main goal. The English Premiership and Champions league qualification.

When we can breeze through the the Europa like Chelsea have then its of cause a no brainer.

We fuck this competition off completely.

League and demostic cups
If the players can't handle playing the likes of the Cypriot cup winners on a Thursday and maintaining a league campaign, how are they supposed to adjust to playing CL midweek matches if we achieve our aims of getting in there again?

What AVB was trying to do this year was get away from the culture of "it's only a Mickey Mouse cup" that Harry had ingrained, that every match is important, and that we want to compete in every trophy we are in. Ultimately the squad was not deep enough this year, but with a few additions and promoting a few more of our talented youth players, we should be able to make it work.

Also, success breeds success, Europa League trophy would be a great springboard for the club as a whole.

We take the piss out of the Arse for winning nothing, it seems some supporters want us to do the same.:(

You may take the piss, but may I politely suggest that as a Spurs fan who's club has done the square root of sweet fuck all over the past christ knows how many years, you may want to reflect on the logic of ridiculing Arsenal fans.
