To everyone who says this is rubbish, we had the same post EL stats (5 out of 7 losses after a EL tie) LAST season.....it cost us a top four place and let Arsenal in by 1 point.

Liverpool have benefitted massively without Europe this year, as have Newcastle compared to last.

But wait, if we have CL ambitions we have to be ready to play mid-week surely???? But at what cost? Do you get the players, get to keep your top players, get the extra cash, prestige and respect in the EL....no way. On top of that CL match days rotate to Tues-Sat too, giving the extra day to recover.....EL doesn't.

Guess you have to ask yourself....are you happy being perennial Europa League fodder, or do you have higher ambitions with a better, ambitious squad competing at the top table?

Liverpool have an uncluttered run of 11 games to win the title and secure CL, at worst. They didn't play in the EL this year..... concidence?

This Europa League excuse is becoming fucking pathetic.. If you are a professional footballer and can't play 90 minutes on a Thursday and then another 90 minutes (at the most) on a Sunday with the breaks, then you shouldn't even be considered a great athlete.. THe reason we lose is the lack of desire and passion, like said in another thread, players need a kick up the backside and need fear put into them

We all said the same thing about Rdm.

Oh he'll never get passed barca :ROFLMAO:

Ahh never mind bayern will crush em :D
............

:confused::eek::(:cry:

Was just a collection of crazy things that will never happen again and the will of Drogba that won them that trophy.

If David Moyes wins the Champions league I will stop watching football and eat marmite for breakfast, lunch and dinner for an entire year and I fucking hate marmite.

Just to add.....can anyone who watched the game today (and any of the post-EL losses) explain such a lacklustre, effortless, tired and generally crap performance in any other way? (Considering out last away game at Newcastle?)

Hint: there's been a pattern here for the last few years that can't be ignored.

so does Champions league next year mean no champions league the following year? If you cant manage a mid-week competition and the league you dont belong in the champions league.

Agree entirely. Don't get me wrong, it certainly does help Liverpool that they've not had to worry about a cup competition mid-week, thus having the extra rest. But what the hell are we going to do if we ever do qualify for the Champions League?

Arsenal had the same rest time as we have had this week, yet they've gone on to do the job on the weekend. In fact, come to think of it, Arsenal have had less overall rest than us because they played last weekend too whereas we didn't have a game. They still managed to get 2 wins out of the 3, with their only loss to the European champions who are a much better side.

It can't be used as an excuse. Neither can the whole "but you can an extra day's rest in the CL". Man City had an extra day to rest this week yet played nowhere near as good as Arsenal this weekend. You only get this extra day every other game too so it's not like it happens all the time. And you've got to consider that you get less of a rest before the Tuesday game due to the fact that it's a day earlier. So it will still have an impact to your schedule and recovery time in the long run.

Today's game was not due to tired legs. Adebayor, Dembele and Lennon did not play on Thursday and we looked devoid of any energy or passion up front as well as everywhere else on the pitch. We just didn't turn up, and Norwich, upon seeing that we weren't up for it, took confidence in this and worked hard to stop us getting anything out of it.

Guess you have to ask yourself....are you happy being perennial Europa League fodder, or do you have higher ambitions with a better, ambitious squad competing at the top table?

You also have to ask yourself are you happy to see Spurs compete for winnable trophies or hang on the coat tails of the Champions League, happy just to be there. Arsenal should be proof that just making up the numbers in the CL isn't all that. How many of their top players left in the hope of winning a trophy? How disgruntled were their fans when Wenger said making it into the CL was more important than winning cups?

The CL will bring a lot of money into the club but we aren't going to win the league nor the CL as we have neither the stadium or financial backing to do so.

Cup finals are great memories. I'm envious of Spurs fans that get to remember the cup finals played under Bill Nick and Keith Burkinshaw. All I've had the pleasure to watch is two League Cup wins. The possibility of a cup final in Turin against Juventus would easily trump them.

People don't like the Europa League, that's their choice, but to use it as a scapegoat for other issues is stupid. Our participation doesn't harm us in the league. When you look at the claims they turn out to be baseless. Maybe it's because Thursday feels so close to the weekend and it instinctively feels like there's less rest, even when it there's the same rest in the CL

I'm sure they changed the rules to stop this from happening.

No the rule change was to stop there being 5 teams from the same country. If united win it Liverpool lose out

It's changing next season (when the EL winners get a place) so that 5 teams from one country can get a spot if one wins the EL or CL (not 6 if teams win both, however). It's only to keep the status quo of the "big" teams getting into the CL regardless going though.

It's more or less the same, cup win takes priority over league placing as it should imo. As finishing 4th doesn't make you a winner.

If we won the europa but finished 8th, and pool won the CL but finished 15th then only the top 2 would qualify. The champions and the runners up. Sounds fair really

League One Playoff finals must be good fun too, but the teams still only finished 3rd or 4th in a very poor league.

Winning cups is great, of course it is, but this competition requires playing 18 odd games to win it! IMO the FA Cup has a higher reputation and would only take 6 games!

Players want CL....and the better the player, the more that want becomes a need. If we want to progress as a club we need CL, if we want to challenge for more than the EL, we need CL, if we want to sign top players, we need CL,.......if you want to keep the top players we have we absolutely need CL.

I can't see how some people find this such a difficult equation, or are you just content us being 'also rans'?

If the players can't cope with mulitiple tournaments, they should go play for Stoke or something.

Why can't we try and challenge for a CL position and win the EL, like Chelsea did?

Yes players will want CL footie but that alone won't keep them. Van Persie, Fabregas, Nasri, etc., weren't content with CL football and no real trophy prospects every season.

I would rather be 'also rans' with several trophies under our belt than regular CL fodder that has to sacrifice all cup runs in order finish 4th.

I know the argument goes something along the lines of yes but id rather win a trophy blah blah blah but genuine question here, is the Europa league even considered as a worthwhile trophy? Hand on heart has anyone ever watched a Europa league game that didn't involve spurs? I certainly haven't. Its a trophy that only the mediocre are invited to play in, the pitches mostly resemble cow pats and to top it all off you mostly have to travel to places that not even the lonely planet books have considered a viable travel location.

If that's the only argument you've got is that its a trophy to be won, why not see if we can enter the Johnsons Paint trophy next season or take those masters 5 aside competitions seriously?

I hate the Europa league and everything it stands for. People who try to compare it with the champions league are living in a dream world. Most of the time the champions league teams play on a Tuesday and then end up playing on a sunday as the "BIG" teams usually end up as the sky super sunday game anyway.

As soon as its mathematically impossible to get that 4th spot then I for one am hoping and praying that Everton and Man Utd overtake us so that next season we get a clear run. The year we got champions league we didn't have Europa to distract us, last year arsenal went out early in the knockout stages and then had 11 cup finals to concentrate on and now Liverpool have the same. No coincidence that we seem to lose the following league game after going away to play some pig farmers in the arse end of nowhere.

Yes. Chelsea, Arsenal and Man City are above them and all are playing in CL. It's all about having a great squad of players. We have had a bad season overall in the League and I'm sorry to say we're all but out of the running for 4th spot now. We were in the running last season so you can't compare our situation now to that of last year. It's about making the most of our situation just like when we won a trophy under Juande despite our poor league form. I want some level of success this season and putting all our eggs into the hope of 4th spot is not a great plan. The way this season has gone I can't believe anyone truly believes we can finish 4th, especially with our goal difference.

It matters not as if Liverpool had been in it they would not bottle it like we do nobody does spectacular failure like spurs we are good at it or shit depending on which way you look at it.

What a ridiculous view of the Europa League. It may not be comparable to the Champions League but you could say the same about the Carling Cup vs the FA Cup. There's more prestige in the FA Cup but a trophy is a trophy and there are only 4 up for grabs. We're hardly in position to take a chance at silverware for granted. I absolutely loved it when we won the Carling Cup and it's our best hope of success this season. I would love to see us compete in the CL again but it wont happen at the end of this season and we don't even stand a chance of winning it anyway. At least we stand a chance of winning the EL.

Yeah but it doesn't effect our league form lol lol lol

You only have to look at our history of trying to compete on many different fronts. We’ve got absolutely no chance. In recent years it's enough of a struggle for us to concentrate on 1 competition let alone 2/3/4!!!!!!!!!

We don't belong there then simple as its quite evident we can't cope with mid week European games.
