[From the ITK thread] I think there can be a positive to Conte not committing long term, and that is to keep a sense of urgency at the club. Players might feel that things need to happen in this coming season, or there might not be another chance. Injecting another 5% of focus could be the difference between a couple of league positions, or a semi-final and a cup win.
BTW, this isn't a suggestion that we *should* work on a year-by-year basis, just that there might be positives to short-termism in a certain scenario, and Conte as manager provides some of the conditions necessary.

I feel Conte has genuinely grown with the team and respects this. Although he’s miles ahead with achievements, they are one at this point in time. He’s not come in to a team of superstars and just motivated, he’s nurtured the team and groomed each player. He’s experienced humble self satisfaction on what he and the players have achieved so far. Who wouldn’t want to see it through. We give him the tools, he and the team have produce.

The club are also going to want to be careful as he has a very very high salary by all accounts. I doubt we'd ever see him getting 4-5 years at that rate.

Like you say though I'd love to see the option activated after some strong transfer activity.
Thinking about it, he’s cheaper than some players who you buy and don’t perform and we get a better return. Pay him what he wants, as a club we need it. I do feel he’s a decent person and will not let us down , if we do likewise.

The news will end speculation over the future of Conte, who spent four days deliberating over whether or not to stay at Spurs after leading the club back into the Champions League with last Sunday’s victory over Norwich City.
I have no idea who Law is, but how could he possibly know that? Did he call and ask Conte and get the reply “I repeat, I am still deliberating” until yesterday?

Might seem a bit obvious to say but with signings like Perisic vastly experienced at 33 with Kane at 29 Son at 30. I suspect he’s looking to assemble a team that he believes can instantly have a crack at the title it’s how he operates. None of this 5 year project nonsense.

Disappointing. I thought he would at least commit for another year. This is a weird announcement committing to what he already committed to last November, given how everything's gone his way.

But hey-ho...

Board showing real ambition giving a manager 150m plus sales on new signings when he only has a 12 month contract

If we spent the money wisely, and Conte leaves next summer, Fonseca Gattuso Rodgers Potter can hit the ground running.

There’s an extra year option, but ultimately he could have a 5 year contract and it wouldn’t mean anything. This Conte. You get the upside, a workaholic, an immense team spirit, strong team building, but you have to live with the downside which is he always challenging his board and liable to decide that he wants to move on if they donnt meet that challenge.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we announce at some point we have a 12 month rolling contract with him

In reality there is no such thing as stability in football. How many times has a manager been sacked with 3-4 years left on a deal?

David Moyes signed a 6 year deal at Man Utd if I remember correctly. Lasted one season.

Stability in a managerial role requires consistent success (relative to the role). The best way to keep a manager like Conte long term is to back him properly which is what we seem to be doing.

A long term deal is really just a bigger liability when/if things go south.

I am surprised that Levy hasn’t tied him down for an extra year now he’s got all this funding. The last thing we want is for Conte to bring in a bunch of players that fit his system, then leave in a year and someone else to come in who has a different system.

This doesn't seem like such a bad scenario. Many top teams play with wing backs. If they'll all be good players, then the new manager will benefit.

Inzaghi did pretty well following Conte at Inter considering they sold 2 of their star players in the summer.

Potter had been mentioned as a potential successor and he often plays 3 at the back.

Yeah, you have to believe that Potter would be the one once Conte leaves. If he's not already moved to a big club by that time, that is.

Didn't Alan Pardew sign a 8 year contract at Newcastle just before it all went pear shaped?!

I'm happy with Conte staying on short term contracts - both keeping ENIC on their toes to match his ambitions at every stage, and yet if it does go wrong it saves the club from an enormous settlement package.
