Wondering: how well has Conte ever done with his teams when they're in the Champs League as well? Strikes me that his meticulous approach to games could work much less well with less prep time

He finished 2nd with Inter in his first season while reaching the Europa League final - so more games than in the Champions League. I'm not sure how much he rotated but even so he juggled both reasonably well.

He's won many league titles with teams also playing in the CL so can't be too bad, although his record in Europe is underwhelming given his calibre as a manager. Never did very well with Juve or Chelsea in the CL, although Inter got to the Europa League final a couple of seasons ago, so not all bad.

Maybe he was saving himself!

When people complain about not upgrading the starting XI this is the sort of nuance that I think can be easily missed. The pre-season and work on the training pitch is invaluable and just as important as the signings themselves, all the "old" players go up a gear. It's not just about signing shiny new toys but getting them to understand exactly what they have to do especially in such a prescriptive system and I suspect that, aside from maybe Perisic, it might be some time before Bissouma and co. fully cement themselves as regulars.
