Sky sports news saying England have an extra spot for fair play now....so we will now be in europe next year with us being the top team not in europe next season so far.

Does this mean intertotto? or straight into the same round as the league place, may also be a reason why we seem to have been a totaly diffrent team against liverpool if it is intertotto

The team in the Europa league via fair play has a lot more qualifying to do than the team who get there through the league, their seasons starts in July. Now we definitely want 5th!

If we finish 5th who else is likely to get the fair play spot?

Intertoto doesn't exist any more, but the fair play "winners" have to enter in the First Qualifying Round, a good three or four rounds earlier than the 5th place and Cup winners.

And, hoping we do the job against Birmingham, it's gonna be Fulham.

If Brum get relegated then their Euro spot is up for grabs too, as you have to be playing in the top league to play in Europe, IF you qualified through the League Cup.....

Is this true? Just not certain as I remember when Millwall played United in the FA Cup final from a position outside of the EPL but still played in the Uefa Cup. Guess that may have been due to it being FA rather then League cup.

We are currently top of fair play followed by Fulham and then Blackpool.
It would be great to beat Brum and take 5th just for the fact that Liverpool wouldn't even get in on the fair play place either. We should do all we can to prevent Liverpool getting a Europa spot.

Not true, as long as you've got a UEFA license for next year, which Birmingham do have, they could play in the Isthmian league and still be in Europe.

carlos Salcido was one of five Fulham players booked against Birmingham Fulham are likely to fill the extra place in the Europa League which Uefa has awarded England as part of the Respect Fair Play rankings.
The Cottagers are favourites as they are second in the Premier League fair-play table behind Chelsea who have qualified for the Champions League.
Tottenham and Blackpool are also in contention, although Spurs could qualify through their league position.
The winning team will be given a place in the first qualifying round.
Norway topped the Uefa Respect Fair Play rankings, which are based on games played by a country's clubs and national teams in Uefa competitions between 1 May 2010 and 30 April 2011.
England were second in the table and Sweden, in third, were also rewarded for their teams' conduct in Uefa games.
As well as yellow and red cards, the standings take into account assessments made by Uefa officials on criteria such as positive play, respect for the opposition, respect for the referee, behaviour of the crowd and team officials.
Fulham, who have not had anyone sent off in the league this season, had five players booked in Sunday's Premier League win at Birmingham.
However, they remain in pole position to be given England's place, which will be decided at the end of the season.
Tottenham are third in the Premier League fair-play table but they will automatically qualify for the Europa League if the beat Birmingham at White Hart Lane on Sunday.
Uefa rules stipulate that relegation is no barrier to entry, so Blackpool would still qualify, should they top the fair-play league, even if they were to drop to the Championship.
Norway's Aalesund and Sweden's Hacken have already been awarded their places in the first qualifying round which takes place on 30 June.
To reach the Europa League group stages, a team will have to play eight games - three two-leg qualifying rounds and a two-leg play-off - by 25 August.

What the fuck? If we end up losing to Brum and have to go through that route, I hope Harry sends out a team consisting of Robbie Keane and...well...just Robbie Keane.

What a dumb qualifying process. "Congratulations on being a team that plays fair football...as a reward we're going to wreck your next season".

Robbie Keane on his own would probably stil win, remember the sort of teams we'd be up against in the first qualification round will most likely just have finished 17th in the Albanian women's 3rd division reserve blind wheelchair under-9s league.

How many red cards would we need to send us down the fairplay league? Should the worst happen and Birmingham tonk us like Blackpool did then we need to get some players off. That would destroy next season before it had begun.

Well, that's a bit of Russian Roulette, ain't it:shrug:

Try to beat Brum whilst having two or three players sent off in case we don'tEek

That's not quite what he's saying, is it?

I think the idea was to get two or three players sent off in the last ten minutes of the game should we find ourselves a couple of goals down. I fully support the idea even though I'm confident it won't be necessary.

Is there any way we could simply turn down the place?

Surely we could legitimately say "thank you very much for offering us a place in the Europa League, but the early start and extra games is as welcomed as the prospect of being stuck in a lift with Timmy Mallett and Chris Moyles".

Surely some alarm bells must be ringing at UEFA headquarters when teams are even contemplating looking for avenues NOT to compete in a European competition!

It really is a ludicrous system with far too many meaningless games played - they should make a straight knock-out cup competition with seeded teams for the first couple of rounds.
