This sucks. I'm no traditionalist but the FA Cup is all a lot of teams have. Why's the Premier League getting involved from before it even fucking enters? The FA Cup isn't there to inconvenience the big teams (throw it if it's so hard for you), it's there to give a dream to those further down. Fucks sake.

I liked the idea that has been mooted on various podcasts where the clubs decide game to game whether they want a replay or not immediately after the draw. If one or both clubs decide they want a replay, there is a replay. The replay is only scrapped if neither side wants it.

So you'd never get a replay in an all-PL tie, which is the sort of tie we really don't want from an entertainment perspective anyway, but a replay between a lower league side vs a PL side is always on the table.

They're trying to dress it up as "give the players a break" but there's hardly a break if you're expanding the European competitions *and* the Club World Cup. It's such disdain for the sport.

In the article you posted it said the Premier League is getting rid of its mid-season break.. Players are being run into the ground and nobody within the game that can do anything about it cares.

I am a traditionalist, and agree this is bad. Domestic competition should always be of primary importance to the FA and clubs of any country. The Champions League has taken over by way of a 'Holywoodisation' and now everything submits to it.

I could stomach the no replay rule from the fifth round onwards - but not this. The romance of the competition is built on minnows getting their day in the sun and the prospect of a club-saving payday by holding a top club to a draw on a mud-bath and going back to their stadium under the lights, live on BBC a week on Tuesday.

Absolute shit-show.

So we get the big build up to the climax of the season, maybe three or four teams in the hunt for the title, another four in a relegation scrap, Euro places up for grabs, and then "Hold on lads, we're just going to put this all on hold for a couple of weeks."

Are they all drunk?

EDIT: Wait, I think it's worse. They're going to play a round of PL matches on the Sunday after the cup final aren't they? But without (probably) four of the teams; the two cup finalists and their opponents, and then squeeze two game in on the following Wednesday? FML.

That's what it sounds like, and that's what makes it even worse IMO.

We get postponed games being played in that final midweek all the time, like we've got City this year, but this is just so avoidable and unnecessary.

Haven't the committed a lot more guaranteed money to the lower end of the pyramid and grass roots clubs because of the changes rather than a luck of the draw payday?

Pretty sure it's like a 30% increase per annum.

Edit: going up from £100mil to £135mil so 35%.

Yeh, sometimes it's just unavoidable. Fixtures pile up and have to be played and it's obviously not optimal. You have to set out with the intention, at least, of giving everyone the same build up to the final match because it's the fair thing to do with so much at stake.

Instead we're going to have 8 teams approaching the last month of the season not knowing whether they're going to need to ask players to play two vital matches in the space of a few days.

Match preparation is out of the window too. Do you start the final week preparing your team to play defensively for the one point you might need, or start working on an attacking formation to play for three in case on the Wednesday the team below you unexpectedly beats a tired FA Cup finalist?

ETA: The FA Cup final was the full-stop to the season. Everyone in the country was focussed on it because it was on a standalone weekend after all the other domestic competitions have finished. The winners can't celebrate as they have potentially two more games to play. The open-top bus can't get out of the garage for two weeks at least (or three, if the League winners are doing theirs).

So much knock on shittiness for one stupid decision.

And to play devil's advocate, the smaller teams have a higher chance of getting through on pens in a one off match

Edit - that's devil's advocate to the scrapping of replays rather than your point

I've said before what I'd prefer to see with the league cup, PL clubs can only field players from their academies with a set number of first team players on the bench with a max of 2 or 3 being allowed on the pitch at one time (something along those lines)
