How much did he cost them? I think the fee will be prohibitive, let alone the wages.
Exactly. He went for a fee that was waaay out of our reach last year, and his stock has only risen since then.

He's been the striker I've wanted us to sign since we were first linked with him while he was at River Plate. Once Atletico sold Aguero and turned their attention to Falcao as his replacement, I knew we were never going to have a hope in hell of signing him.

Gutted, no doubt. But onwards and upwards. We need to be looking for the next Falcao before he turns into £30m player.

I hate hearing the name Falcao.

Reminds me of when we were apparently close to bringing him in before Porto bought him.

If that is true, whoever decided not go that extra length needs shooting!

I do have a sneeky suspicion that in some way aqua's "falcao" comment may actually be cryptic for our own "falcao" in other words a young prospect who will become as prolific as falcao? And if atletico still owe porto part of the fee then there may be a legal loophole or transfer loophole that levy has looked into and see's as an option? the copious amounts of marijuana I smoke have contributed heavily to this theory. Damn SC brings upon stress and excitement found nowhere else on the planet

Really can't see this happening. Ade wouldn't be returning to play second fiddle. We will sign Ade and a young striker

Luuk De Jong finalised his move to Gladbach? I admire the club's optimism if they're still contemplating trying to do a deal for Leandro but I can't see it. Castaignos staying at Inter I assume now.

AVB must be aware of some uber-striker hidden away in Portugal or Mozambique or somewhere.

to be fair, Falcao was not very good at River. So it's understandable in some way.

I know it because I live in Buenos Aires and I'm a River fan

Really? His record was impressive.

He must have come on leaps and bounds at Porto then. He is one of, if not, the best strikers in the world now.

We all know that stats don't tell the whole story.

At River, he started great. 7 goals in his first 7 games. Then he had a knee ligament injury and never really returned to his past form.

He scored several goals, but he missed a lot too. He was really clumsy and his first touch was dreadful. At Porto it seems he was properly coached and he definitively bulked up

Also people need to realise that AM need the funds - they can't afford to keep Falcao and as such i would suspect he will go somewhere this window for less than what they paid for him, even if it's a 31st August deal.

I've read that they owe €28m to Porto...now if AM would accept that payment to cover their debt and then write off the other €12m, I'd say it was a very good price for Falcao, as it would translate to around £22m. Not a bad price at all, and as said above, offloading Defoe, Jenas, Bentley and maybe A.N. Other combined could theoretically offset his wages.

It might require breaking the wage cap though, which I can't really see happening.

So I'm quietly optimistic that the financing of this deal could in theory work out. But to save myself (and readers) the disappointment, I'll probably just say that the majority are right, this deal won't happen in a million years, etc etc.

I'll keep my fingers crossed, though.

The difference between this window and previous ones is that we can get excited about realistic signings (eg. Vertonghen) as opposed to being forced to dream the dream due to the negativity of the reality. All is good.

I really think there has been a significant change in our finances. Once the club stopped being a plc there was no longer a legal obligation to make transfer costs and other financial details available. Lots of rumours about Lewis being involved more, and about possible funding from overseas.

Other things seemed to suggest this as well. Sigurdsson turning down the opportunity to work with Rodgers again in favour of Spurs (not saying we're not a more attractive team than Liverpool, but money is always important). AVB saying that Levy approaches transfers in a "different way" really made me think that we have the money, but are going out of our way not to advertise the fact. Lewis or A.Nother might be putting a huge amount of investment into the team, however it's in Levy's nature to keep costs to a minimum wherever possible. What good would come from publically stating that we have the cash to step up to a level that can compete with United, Arsenal and Liverpool (if not Chavski and City)? None.

I think JJ knows exactly what is going on, but is quite correctly avoiding any comments on it. He's already posted about Lewis in a way that implies a shift in his recent input, then gone noticeably quiet when the topic of investment has come up.

I think the powers that be reckognise where we are as a club. We're not knocking on the door of the top 4. We're a team that has finished in the top 4 twice in three years. Now is the time to step up investment when we are in the mix. A new, young manager, an incredible new training facility, a new stadium on the cards...this is the perfect time to start competing with the big boys.

Having said all that I don't think we'll get Falcao. It's my belief that we're using the investment money on wages rather than transfers. I suspect we'll smash our transfer record by re-investing the sale of Modric by bringing in Moutinho, but I can't see us bringing in someone like Falcao.
