More than 170,000 seats were left empty during Arsenal's home games last season, according to startling new figures which cast serious doubt on the Premier League’s boast of record occupancy on the eve of the new campaign.

I wonder if our attendances are all kosher and what does that do to our proposed 60,000 stadium capacity? Is 50,000 a better capacity for Spurs?

They sold all the tickets. The only reason they (or anyone else) are bothered is because they have fans that want tickets but can't get them. They mention the selling of tickets that fans can't go to, Spurs use stub hub for this reason.

The false figures for attendance, if true, could well have an impacrt on their advertising revenue. I would have thought that the fees paid by the advertisers would be linked to attendance, not the number of tickets sold, so the inflated figures would mean they have received a higher income than they should have done. Maybe the advertisers would want some of their money back!

All clubs do it to preserve the illusion of scarcity to enable them to charge high ticket prices.

Hence a game at the emirates cost almost as much as a Dortmund season ticket

Arsenal have always announced their 'attendance' as tickets sold rather than how many people in the ground watching the game. A Capital One Cup game last season (could have been the year before) when they were live on Sky the crowd started booing when they announced on the PA system that the attendance was circa 58k, when it was blatantly obvious that there were more like 30k.

Yeah my Arsenal supporting mate said whenever he goes the announcer always claims they've sold out but there's visibly a lot of empty seats. Think it's a case of them getting given out to companys etc and people just not bothering to go. Must be frustrating for the other fans although to be fair the atmosphere there doesn't change regardless of whether they have 100 fans or 60,000 fans

I recall hearing that they sell a number of seats for a season to companies who then sell them on as part of package deals (flight, ticket & hotel, that kind of thing) so those tickets count as "sold" for every match even if the company fails to fill it. Shrewd business as they get revenue for seats that may otherwise go unfilled in low category matches, but doesn't really look great and isn't particularly good for the atmosphere.

This is exactly true, my company has an allocation of 20 tickets alone for Arsenal (10 for Spurs) for Client visits for every match... most weeks they are not used. And if they are not used, the seats stay empty.

"Attendance for matches at the Emirates Stadium recorded by the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS), which counts the number of spectators who turn up to games"

How the hell can the Metropolitan Police Service count the number of spectators? I'm sure they have nothing to do with the counting. I'm almost certain that the ticket scanners would send a count back to a computer and that's how an accurate figure is determined. But those scanners belong to the club so why the hell wouldn't they just publish that figure, the fools.

I'd hazard a guess that the Met have these figures for safety reasons, actual numbers in the case of an emergency evacuation maybe?
