Er...Sherwood is very highly thought of - what makes you think he's been demoted?

Yeah, promoted is probably more accurate. But Sherwood was coaching NGS last season and now it's Inglethorpe. Sherwood doesn't have coaching role anymore I believe, but word suggests that is no demotion.

I seriously doubt Levy would give him free reign to spend as much as he likes. As long as Levy controls the purse-strings, any scout or DoF will have to accept their hands will be tied.

Not that there's anything "wrong" with that. Levy knows what's good for the club/business. But it's a problem when a chap's job is to scout and locate talent but then his club is unable to secure that talent. Like Damaio and now apparently Isco that Broomfield was working on.

Awwwwwwwwww....shucks

Which is how I understood it, too. I know that he isn't coaching the NG this season...just didn't understand why anyone would iterpret that as inherently a demotion.

True. But Arnesen and Comolli both spent more than when Levy has been acting DoF.

Sounds good to me, hope he would be able stop Levy moving the goalposts in the latter stages of a transfer in order to get a better deal only to leave empty handed

Is there any actual evidence of this except the rantings of an opposition chairman also trying to get the bets deal for his club ?

I thought I'd ask rather than rate this old or, worse, dumb

Because Inglethorpe has been promoted over him.

Sherwood will be next out of the door IMO. I think AVB wants a clean sweep.

Interesting. Why do you think that? Word from the club implies Sherwood is very highly thought of. His new role is in charge of checking out our talent currently on loan and assessing players at the club. This has to be more important than coaching one group of kids, I'd have thought. Essentially asking whether it's more important to coach Ryan Fredericks or check on David Bentley (last season Steve Caulker), I guess.

You could well be right, but that's not how it's been described.

Good point, well made.

IF the manager wants him that is fine by me.

The original post does suggest it was approved or at least insinuated the Andre was pro active in this mention.

So, very good record at Roma, and it says he followed capello to Madrid, then the first early signings were Higuian and Gago.

Now then, that does look promising!

Didn't the word from the club say exactly the same about Broomfield though?

I think AVB has major plans for overhauling our whole system. There has been a lot of rot over the past 10-15 years and I think he intends to change that. He obviously can't do it all at once, but I think he has now identified the babies in the bathwater (Inglethorpe, maybe McDermott and Parks), and the rest are now being moved on (Broomfield, Senior,.....Sherwood, Ferdinand)

I don't know much about Sherwood, but in interviews he never seems the brightest bulb in the box or particularly insightful. Isn't he also Jamie's best mate?

What does that even mean? If you mean in how Italian clubs are organised then it is the same for almost every contenential club. It is odd to be critical when it comes to Italian management considering the on going popularity of Italian coaches.

The only real difference of the contenential and british system anyway is that of who is the man in charge of the club. A director who is better able to see the long term needs of the club or a coach who is better able to see the short term needs. Either way the head coach doed not micro manage every detail and is relient on many different staff.

It means exactly what it says. With an Italian DOF I'd be concerned that he'd populate the team with players more suitable for Serie A. i.e. slow as shit ladyboys with floppy gay hair.

Another thing. Perhaps AVB doesn't plan to use the loan system like Redknapp did.

With the deadwood (bar Bentley, Jenas and Gomes) now gone, and the new U21 league for young players, do we really need to pay much attention to that area any more? Remember the peak in it happened by default because of the collapse of the reserve league structure.

He is listed as assistent 1st team coach on wiki. Which would suggest he has taken Allen's old job.

We pulled out of the reserve league. It certainly hasn't collapsed Arsenal still have a reserve team and they seem to take pretty good care of their young prospects.

Early in the Summer Goal.com reported that we had plans to bring in Rodgers, with Baldini alongside him as DOF. Plans which apparently went by the wayside when the FA plumped for Hodgson over Harry. In hindsight not sure that Rodgers would have agreed to work alongside someone else, but the article was by Stobart I think, and I tend to trust him.

Edit: Here's the article http://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/2896...enham-will-stick-with-redknapp-after-ditching

Sounds like Baldini's been on the radar a while.

Not the word I heard... ;)

I tend to believe it when numerous unrelated sources agree. As they have that Sherwood is part of the furniture. His job description has changed, but he's gained significant responsibilities in other areas. Check out WindyCOYS on Twitter and his blog (and the podcasts he appears on) for more details.

I agree broadly with what you're saying, I just think you might have been a bit quick to dismiss Sherwood's standing at the club. Note: think. I could well be mistaken.

Yeah - he was also mooted as Ancelotti's potential DoF the summer before last.

Levy is mates with Capello after all, so you'd assume knows Baldini through him/dealing directly with him in the England set-up.

I don't trust Wiki. He's not on the OS, which means he's not on the coaching staff. As I mention above, Windy's got a good review of his job description - from actually speaking to Sherwood himself. Worth checking that out. He is not a straightforward assistant first team coach, responsibilities outstrip that.

If he can find us a couple of talented unknowns who then blossom under AVB it will be more then worthwhile.

Apropos of this convo, selected Tweets from Windy:

Sherwood looking after U21s.

Sherwood highly thought of.

As far as I'm aware he's still Technical Co-Ordinator - takes U21s & monitors loan players. Basically link between U18s/1st team.

Ramsey, Sherwood and Ferdinand are the Dev Squad coaches essentially.

And chat with Paul from SO:

Paul Smith@spursodyssey
@WindyCOYS - discussed this with @RayLo18 the other day. Sherwood looking after U21s this season

Windy@WindyCOYS
@spursodyssey Indeed, and watching loaners too.

That's a bit of an idea from a chap who spends a lot of time at the club and the top blogger on the youth/development set-up.

You haven't answered the question.
I didn't ask if Inglethorpe had been given the task of managing the NG squad...I know he has. It is a non-sequitor (it does not follow), the fact that Inglethorpe has been given the task of managing the NG doesn't prove (or even suggest) that Sherwood has been demoted. It is not evidence to substantiate your, IMHO, wrong belief that Sherwood has been demoted.

It is irrelevant what was said about Broomfield...unless you are assuming that the club always says the opposite of what it means, like, AVB is a :censored: we will be sacking him immediately because he is fecking useless means he is very higly thought of and his job is secure. It doesn't work like that.

AVB does have major plans for overhauling the system - that doesn't mean that Sherwood has been demoted because he is no-longer managing the NG team.

Er...Daniel Levy instituted massive and deep changes in how we work when he took a moratorium after the sacking of GHodd. AVB may have some changes in personnel envisaged, and some changes in focus, but I don't think he is going to undo all the good work that has been done. And I don't see what the relevance of how the club was 15 years ago is...Levy has already swept that all away with a massive broom.

I agree, I think AVB is identifying the babes in the bathwater - it is also possible that you are right in some of the IDs you propose (i was thinking earlier to what extent Parks's training methods would suit the type of sweeper-keeper AVB wants, like Lloris), but none of that either shows that Sherwood has had a demotion or that he will be out on his ear (or, indeed, that he is a babe in the bathwater).

Whether he seems bright in interview or is Jamie's mate is irrelevant. The main evidence we have to go on is threefold:
1) Whether he did a good job with the youth or not. The reports are that his work was well considered and approved. He not only had them playing well, and getting good results, but also implemented the desire to have a club style very well. I can only say that the more serious observers on here, and myself, too, in watching the NextGen were very impressed - and I, personally, observed how technically able our young lads were, and how well that stood up against bigger more physical opponents while playing ina style that was very reminiscent of our first team.
2) Whether he is well-thought of in the club - and as BO says almost without exception the reports say that he is.
3) Whether or not he has been promoted - and myself and almost everyone else took his knew position to be a promotion.

I could be wrong, but I think if Sherwood was going he would have went when Mr Redknapp and co were dismissed.
