Chris Wood should probably be looked at by any club needing a stand-in striker who'd do a job & likely be happy to stick around as back-up medium-term.

Chelsea looking at Mertens for 5 million, that's a steal...
32 years old, contract up in the summer, Napoli are a basket case where every decent player is looking to leave right now.

I'm sure they'll hold out for more than 5m but not a lot more.

I mentioned him as an option for us earlier in the window but nobody on here was keen at the time. Suspect it is different now.

Edit: just read this on the Athletic. Doesn't sound an easy deal to do for chelsea:

Just an explanation on Chelsea's link with Dries Mertens. I understand there was a meeting between his agent and Marina Granovskaia before Christmas about whether there would be any interest over a move to Stamford Bridge. Lampard is keen because Mertens can play in four positions - left wing, right wing, No 10 and up front. As things stand, Chelsea have only made an inquiry to Napoli over the last few days, not an official bid.
A late move hasn't been ruled out, but it is far from straight forward. Mertens is out of contract in the summer and Napoli haven't given up on agreeing an extension, although it sounds unlikely.
Another factor is Mertens has been injured this month which has halted his pursuit of overtaking Marek Hamsik's record (121) as all-time goal-scorer for the club (Mertens has 118). It is understood it remains an ambition of his and he'd prefer to leave the club on a high by reaching the landmark.
However, it is believed a move to London would appeal.
There is also the issue of negotiating with Napoli chairman Aurelio De Laurentiis, which is never an easy task. But given Napoli stand to lose Mertens for nothing in the summer, it has been suggested a bid of say £7-10m might convince him to cash in.
Chelsea have the option of talking to Mertens now over a free transfer move in the summer, but would face a lot more competition.

So if it was 35, then 30/40 is pretty much what I said.

"Rising to" isn't what they've paid until they paid it. Same as Martial at United.
Well considering the original poster said they paid around £50m for him, it’s hardly laughable as that’s exactly what they did.

The Norwegian in me is very excited by this, Berge has real potential to be a top class CM and will hopefully get a lot of games straight from the off in that Sheffield United side, something he wouldn't necessarily have got at a bigger club just yet.

One of those who could well be worth £50m+ in a few years.

Can't quite understand why we aren't in for him. If we aren't going to break the bank for Ndidi or someone at that level, Berge seems to perfect punt for a team desperately need of a young, fit, imposing CDM.

He's much more of a Dembele/Ndombele than a classic CDM. He is superb at shielding the ball and driving the team forward, he doesn't just sit in front of the defence as a Dier would.
