Yes but I'm certain we can replace Winks with a superior player for £40m.

The CM area has been a bodge for.a.while. it is hard to judge Winks properly, this messed up.season. look back.at when he broke onto the scene and did so well. Personally I've seen enough to know what he brings, breaks up opponents play and is far more progressive with a good partner... as discussed to death.

But I'd be interested in knowing who.would be a superior player at 40m, in the cm position, that can be fairly judged, having played in a comparably bodged CM?

If he went to Man City he'd be on better wages but it wouldn't do his career much good as he'd get about as much game time as Phil Foden. A few League Cup and FA Cup games and possibly the odd 15-20 mins here and there when they are already 3 or 4 nil up against West Brom or Fulham or the Spammers in the PL.

I think his England career would go down the pan too. Southgate likes regular performers, even if they come from smaller clubs.

You're just guessing - City aren't spending £40m on a player to play a few fringe matches.

I am guessing, but it's not like Man City haven't got plenty of past form for spending tens of millions on players and then leaving them on the bench, £40m might be a big deal for some, but for them it's no big deal.

It would be their joint 6th highest transfer fee they've paid out.

...that is homegrown as well.

I would be surprised if anyone could name one, single English player not older than Winks, that would realistically be attainable for >£40M that a united Spurs Community would consider a "superior player".

City paid more for John Stones and Leroy Sane in 16/17, and they become regulars in the City team, I think not, and not so extreme examples, Bernardo Silva they paid more for, he often plays second fiddle, Jesus, he is only used when Aguero is injured and even Mahrez is not always a first pick, I could go on.....

I wouldn't be surprised if Winks was to be a regular starter for City.

Personally wouldn't sell him.

Stones and Sane were brought for first team football, Stones was inistally getting matches but he just regressed and Sane got injured and then wouldn't sign a contract, Bernardo made 34 league appearances this season as did Jesus, Mahrez had 33 - they are averaging about 30 a season in the league which is as good as you're gonna get in the Man City team unless your name is Kevin De Bruyne or Raheem Sterling, you can go on all you like but those numbers don't equate to 'a few league and FA cup games and the odd 15-20 mins'.

De Bruyne, Ederson, Walker, Danilo, Mendy, Sane, Sterling, Stones, Laporte, Mahrez, Bernardo Silva and Rodri were all more. Not sure where you got this from.

City might want to save their cash now Messi has told Barcelona he wants to leave.

As others have mentioned, most of Winks game time has come playing in a highly unbalanced midfield. The question is whether his performances will improve to the quality we would expect for a regular starter in a top 4 team (minimum) once the midfield is stabalised. IMO where he is at now falls short of that. Compared to our best (and/or most effective) midfielders of the last 15 or so years including Carrick, Modric, Parker, (peak) Dembele, (peak) Wanyama he falls well short. Comparing him to these players may seem harsh but if we want to regularly compete for leagues and trophies that is the sort of the quality we need.

Winks clearly has a lot of natural talent as well as a great work ethic and attitude. He is also “one of our own”. On that basis I would be inclined to keep him and give him a chance within a properly functioning midfield. If he wants to stay at the club I definitely wouldn’t want us pushing him out of the door. But at the same time I can see how a £40m bid might give the club pause for thought.

As they've got more money than sense I'd say, give us £20m plus Phil Foden in return, instead of £40m and they might just have themselves a deal. Otherwise in my opinion we should turn it down.
