A couple of seasons ago I thought Harry Winks was a good prospect. Unfortunately, he hasn't progressed and although he has the odd good game I see nothing now to lead me to believe he offers us anything other than being a decent squad player. He seems a decent young man, works hard and is good in possession, but he seldom makes an inspired pass, something we desperately need.

Over the years, we've produced from our academy some tidy but not quite the real deal midfielders. Winks sits in this category along with Mason, O'Hara, Townsend, Benteleb and then further back, Samways and Howells.

Absolutely right. I was going to say the same, I don't know what we do in our academy with CMs because all we seem to produce are really uninspiring neat and tidy CMs but who never offer anything creatively or much defensively. Winks is exactly like Tom Carroll, O'Hara, Mason etc.

To be honest I preferred Mason the most out of those lot. He was a bit more dynamic and aggressive.

Creative is elusive it's a difficult one to find

I know the winks lovers will want to avoid talking about him but please tell me the last time he had a good game and you didn’t have to make excuses for him ? Shocking today and we didn’t get going until he came off awful player

Agreed, they were all bad today in stretches though. Still no excuses. Agreed.

Winks' job in this side is to keep the ball moving and he struggles to do this with the players around him who hide (Sissoko), don't want it (Jan when at LB), want it when it's too dangerous and they'll give it away (Dele, Moura, Son) so I think he gets judged harshly but it's another player thread where the same posters make the same points again and again so why am I bothering?

I know he’s one of us but sadly I don’t then think he’s premier league level not alone our ambitions level he’s just lost out there I think he’s suited to Italian or Spanish football

Keeping the ball moving is a complete myth for a start he doesn’t move the ball quick enough secondly he can’t switch the play ! also a top cm does more than keep the ball moving it’s actually laughable

As I say, same posters making the same points - I think it's best we agree to disagree and I stop posting in this thread.

I think he'll be in the shop window this summer, just don't think he's suited to our system and we'll likely need funds to reinvest. Hopefully he'll continue to be a part of England's setup and we can get a decent fee for him.

‘Shocking’ ridiculous hyperbole as usual. He was fine. Passed forward, controlled the ball, defensively disciplined.

The agenda against him is fucking tiring now.

I still think there is a good squad player in him.

But it's frustrating when he (and he isn't the only 1....l gets the ball while he is facing our goals and can't turn and look up.

Ndombele and Dembele used their strength to hold off players and turn them, but Winks can't do that.

We just end up playing the ball back to the defence and let teams press us. He either needs to not be so square when getting the ball, or break the lines and get more time on the ball.

But I think he has better games when we have more of the ball and he can face the right way.

I think he played forward the majority of time. He’s got the ability to take the ball on the half turn and go past his marker. Tbf he didn’t have much chance to show that today - probably due to lack of confidence - but he’s got it in his locker.

agree and his more of an attacking player than DEF lets be fair, he can do his bit and help out and atleast he tries and seems to give a crap than alot of the players, its ackward position for him trying to be a carrick role when its maybe not his ideal position, also he wasnt really helped in the middle today, you could see it was instuction for Dier and Verts to push forward in the midfield area to give support, but risky very high game.

Some games he can, but I'm not sure he has done it enough to say its in his locker.

Could also be him playing as the holding cm, so isn't taking the risk of turning players, but with little option other than going back, it's causing us more problems.

Even Eriksen did the same when he moved there.

Agree. Think his days with us are numbered under Mourinho. We many not actively look to shift him but I think he'll look to move as his minutes on the pitch reduce.
