as well as egos :)

according to this

http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/606/A32065148

I never know the etiquette for copying and pasting - but anyway we're top with £60m spent - rovers bottom with £4m

naturally these aren't net spends and are are probably entirely inaccurate - but hey - it's interesting I reckon :)

Still though, just goes to show some of the bargains other teams get that we seem to miss out on, Blackburn and Everton are the first that spring to mind.

yep - but the toffees have been positively profligate compared with the tight fisted rovers - and to think they once bought the league - they couldn't buy a night out on their current spending

It all counts for nothing spending big if there is no end product.

At the end its the end result ie league position and silverware etc that counts. The last time I looked they both were higher up the league than us, and unless we win the CC, they will likely to be in Europe next season ahead of us.

Not wholly accurate - Bale's 5 mill to rise to 10 considering if we win anything + appearances, Bale likewise was only 10 or so mill (if not less?) rising to 16.5 with goals scored, things won etc.

Plus some is speculation, like Gilberto being 1.9 mill...probably right, but no confirmation.

yea but most other clubs are like that too, do you think Torres was a £20m+ 1 payment deal? they won't have paid more than £10m so far I don't think.

True enough Bullet - as with the big egos story I'm not taking this too seriously -

it's fair enough to say that Rovers are doing well especially given their spending - but in the end they'll win nowt - and let's be honest who gets the bigger TV audience us or them - of course I'm biased but the football we play is better than them and our games are more exciting than theirs -

even their own fans can barely be bothered to watch them

even with all our spending it wouldn't surprise me if we are more profitable than them this year - it'll certainly be close and our squad is worth a damn sight more too
for what it's worth my guess is we've had a net spend of £30/35m this year - a lot but affordable

At least we're turning the clock back to the 60s and early 70s when we were constantly the top spenders.

This is the breakdown of our spending:

*Summer*
Gareth Bale, Southampton FC, £10,000,000
Darren Bent, Charlton Athletic, £16,500,000
Younes Kaboul, Auxerre, £8,000,000
Adel Taraabt, Lens, undisclosed
Yuri Berchiche, Athletic Bilbao, undisclosed
Kevin-Prince Boateng, Hertha Berlin, U (£6.0m)
Danny Rose, Leeds Utd, Undisclosed
Total £40,500,000

*January*
Chris Gunter, Cardiff City, U (£3.0m)
Jonathan Woodgate, Middlesbrough, £7,000,000
Alan Hutton, Glasgow Rangers, £8,000,000
Gilberto, Hertha Berlin, U (£1.9m)
Total £19,900,000

TOTAL £60,400,000

I think it would be fairer to call those commitments. I don't think we've actually paid more than £5m for Bale yet. Nor have we paid out that amount for Bent. KPB wasn't more than £5m.

Taarabt I think was around £2.5m, Berchiche less than £1m as was Rose.

And as pointed out in that thread we got a quarter of that total back (£15m) for Mido and Defoe.

Also, you must look at it in context, sunderland have spent loads to improve what was a shite squad, we have spent loads to imrprove and push into the top4 eventually. Arsenal have only spent 22mil but wenger has built this squad over many many years and now it's very good there's not need to spend loads. Also doesn't take into account sales. Fairly pointless really LOL>

Exactly , the only quick way to gate crash success in these Sky Premiership days is to spend big , Chelsea proved that .

And it won't all stick , as well as Berbatov's and Drogba's there will be a few Shevchenko's and KPB's .

The important thing is not to bottle it , one more successful window in the Summer if Ramos can keep the momentum going we should be all set for a serious challenge on forth .

That is a lot of fukcing money.. Bale is very well spent and is going to be an enormeus player for us in the future.. I am a fan of Bent , but the fee is still way to high + we did'nt really need him when we had Defoe,Keane, Berba on board.

Kaboul is a waste of money so far, hopefully he can develop to something in the future.. With King and Woody as centrebacks he should get some time in the pitch.

Boateng is also a player for the future, but has a lot to work to do before he will win me over..

So far I'm very pleased with all the January signings.. Woodgate is a class act, a leader at the back, and if Ledley ever get really fit, we will have the best centre paring in the EPL.

Hutton is looking promising so far, haven't seen much of him, just the Manure game, but the guy is getting so much praise for his performances for Rangers and Scotland.

Gilberto is a chancebuy in my opinion but we didn't pay a huge fee to take him here, so he is the player I have least expectations on..

Gunter is for the future.. But is playing for Wales national team and only that should give him a lot of experience..

Yeah agree that one more big push in the Summer and we may then be close to a realistic and sustainable challenge for a CL spot.

In all honesty we wasted a heap of money buying players that were not first teamers last summer. We needed players that would improve our first 11 not our squad/reserve team.
In fact if we sold 4 of them,Kaboul,Boateng,Bent and Taraabt, they probably would'nt be missed. The obvious exception being young Gareth Bale who is a fantastic addition to our team.

If we're not looking at net spend, what's the point?

Seriously - every time this is trawled up. Why would you isolate players bought and players sold?

The only thing it shows is that we've got quite a high player turnover. Well I reckon anyone with any sort of football acumen could have told you that.

Useless figures.

I kind of agree with you, but in the last two windows not many earners left!

Mido - £6m
Murphy - Undisclosed (around £1m)
Defoe - £9m
Routledge - £1.5m
Barnard - Undisclosed (must be less than £1m)
Ifill - Undisclosed (Less than half a million)
Yeates - Undisclosed (Less than half a million)
Halfredsson - Undisclosed (Less than half a million)
Ziegler - £1.5m

Am I missing anyone?

I reckon we may have made around £20m back at a push.

£20m at a push is still quite a lot, Kend. It's a third of the original figure. Which although still states we've invested - we've needed it.

The consensus on here was that we overachieved with what we had and now we're adding the flesh to the bones as it were.

And stemark, I don't understand your definition of "waste" - because it's ludicrous. We've invested in our future and our present. Would you rather we didn't spend our money on upcoming talent? Would you rather we didn't send out a message that we're prepared to buy youngsters and play them?

Kaboul and Boateng are ones for the future. Bale's a superstar, technically, and that's why we beat United to sign him. And I bet he's glad he made the move to us, because I don't think he would've got a look-in at OT yet. His exposure to our first team is exactly what he needed. It's not for all youngsters, but he is ready and seems to have his head switched on.

As for Bent, how you can pass judgment already (even though he's scored some important goals) is beyond me, and quite frankly typical of how a lot of Spurs fans come around to an opinion based on the short term, without the ability to see beyond the next fixture nor the last.
