I think it's clear that avb wants to play a 4-3-3 but do we have the players for it at the moment?

What do you see as our best formation and personnel up until January where we might be able to strengthen?

Lloris
Walker-Dawson-Vertongen-Bae
Siggurdson-Sandro-Dembele
Dempsey-Ade-Bale

Now I have no idea how that team would perform, unlikely Dawson will get the nod but with the losses of big players like King, Mod and Vdv I really think we need someone with experience and passion in the spine of the team.

Don't get me wrong, Dawson's hoofs get on my nerves as much as anyone but I feel that vert and gallas are not strong enough aerially to deal with the more robust strikers.

Also I'd have Dempsey over Lennon, we need someone who can contribute goals in the front 3.

Thoughts?

I think it's 100% a 4231 we'll be playing this season, given our personnel.

Lloris
Walker Kaboul Vertonghen BAE
Sandro Dembele
Lennon Dempsey Bale
Adebayor

Alternatives:

Friedel
Naughton Caulker Gallas Naughton
Parker Livermore
Gylfi/Dembele Gylfi/Dembele Lennon/Townsend/Dembele
Dempsey/Defoe

I think we've decent depth except at striker.

The thing we're really missing is the man to make it all tick. We've lost a bit of magic also, in VdV, but to some extent that wouldn't matter if we could have made the team the star, but without Moutinho to bring it all together, we still look like a team which will struggle for an identity, a sort of rhythm/tempo thing. Without that heart-beat the loss of VdV suddenly becomes that much greater.

For me we look like a side who will be great off the ball, but who won't be massively difficult to neutralise on it. I hope I'm wrong, but I think we may struggle a bit this season.

Anyway, let's thump Norwich today, and we can all start feeling a bit better :)

This is possibly the tallest Spurs side I can remember. Everyone except Benny is 6 foot or over unless I am very much mistaken. Hopefully now we haven't got to endure Modric's piss-poor floated corners, and we have a coach who will work on set pieces, maybe becoming proficient in this area could make up for being a little less creative...

I think the general consensus about 4-3-3 is correct.

I think AVB will rotate and pick teams based on the opposition so everyone will get games and players like Dempsey, Sig, and Dembele who can are versatile to play different positions will get games at those different positions.

Having said that I think our 'solid' option will be:

Sandro----Parker----Dembele
Dempsey-----Ade------Bale

without Parker and Dawson there is no leadership. Succesful teams have leaders barca(puyol, xavi, valdes) madrid (casillas, ramos) city ( yaya toure, Barry).

Given the players at our disposal and the problems in our current team, there is only 1 system that might get us out of the almighty shit that we are in and AVB needs to see it.
I guarantee he never use's it!
---------------keeper---------------
----Gallas---Dawson-----Verts-----
Walker-----------------------Bale
-------Sandro----Livermore--
-------------Dembele--------
----Dempsey------Adebayor

The midfield really needs to push up 10 yards and play on the halfway line.
There is NO point in playing Ekotto on the left with Bale in front of him and there is NO point in playing Walker and Lennon on the right.
Dawson can come in and really shout at people,he may not be the quickest but at least he will rip into others if they are not putting in the effort.
The heart has been ripped out of our team and we really need someone to get it back.

WHY DID WE BUY LLORIS?
WE HAVE 4 GOALKEEPERS AND NO PLAYMAKER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Assuming Andre's 433, because he loves it so much and has talked about changing to it, the question for me is whether Dempsey can play right forward. I've read he's much better on the left where he can cut in and the whole goal is at good angles for his right foot, which sounds plausible. But assuming Bale remains completely incapable of playing on the right, I think the system calls more for Dempsey's skills there than Lennon's, if the width really is to be provided by the full backs. Plus that leaves the CAM spot free for Sigurdsson to score from. Four goalscorers to brute force us out of the mess we're in.

__________Lloris
Walker Gallas Vetonghen Benny
________Sandro

very close to what i think it will be, just swap siggy and dempsey around, and kaboul (gallas while he's injurd) over caulker. not sure if caulker will be given a chance. maybe if he does well in the europa league he'll be given one...

Yeah I agree, I just meant in the meantime, Kaboul is out for an age.

In the future, I think something like this, emphasizing that the fullbacks get forward and that Dempsey cuts into the box especially when Bale has the ball and is crossing it in:

By all accounts AVB wants to play 4-3-3, but we can't really have two genuine wingers playing in a 4-3-3 as we lose attacking threat. We also need Sigurdsson dropping deeper to pick up the ball as well as Dembele.

Also just a thought, but we could play 3-5-2 potentially with Bale and Walker as wingbacks, Caulker, Vertonghen, and Dawson/Gallas at the back (I'm excluding Kaboul in both lineups because he's injured, ditto Parker), same midfield, with Adebayor and Dempsey up front.

Probably won't happen with AVB but might be an idea.

I don't understand how everyone can have Sigurdsson in any line up....................what have you seen from him that suggests he should be in the team?

I think any of the above formations people have mentioned would suit us better than what we've played the last two games. Unfortunately, I get the sense that we have a manager who may get a little stuck in his ways and will keep trying to smash those square pegs into the round holes. I'm skeptical that we will see many changes in formation for next game.
