If you're willing to sell at any price, you're a prick. We don't need the money, and it's not like we can go out and get Messi (or, in fact, anyone better) to replace him just 'cos we've got x amount to spend.

Unfortunately he, and every one of our players is for sale. It's been proven time and again that we will sell anyone, even those we are "building the team around", if what is deemed to be the right price is offered.

And if the player wants to go (I have heard no indication that Modric wants to), off he will go, even if you're ManU. Maybe you can hold him one season more than he wants, like we did for Berbatov and ManU did for Crissy, but apparently not more.

Football = 100% business. Levy once tellingly said that he doesn't see success on the field as being incompatible with running a profit-making business. The unspoken implication being that if it were (or is), that latter concern will carry the matter. And I think we've seen that it always does.

I knew someone would bring up Man U and Ronaldo. The difference is that Man U can sell, not because it's a lot of money for a player that wants to go, but because they know they have the appeal and lure (combined with the money they get) to strengthen, maybe even improve their team after his departure.

Therein lies the difference. The top 4 know they can let whoever they want go, given the price is right, because they have the lure to be able to replace them with other world class players. We don't.

Agree with the rationale but doubt Man Utd would match our valuation - Modric is not as proven as Berba. If that happens then its going to get ugly again.

Well if they don't they don't get him, same as with Berba.

It could get ugly again, though my guess is that Modric wouldn't sulk like Berba did.

If he did we would manage the mid without him.

I would trust Levy to play hardball, the way he did so successfully with Berba and Carrick.

In fact having had their wallets burned twice, I wonder if Man U would even try it on this time.

I wouldn't say Man Utd had their wallets burned - i think they got fair-value from their investments. Carrick's 1 of their key players now. Berba has yet to live up to the price tag but will come clean because he has real quality.

30m is fair-value for Modric - we had the risk of signing a player with no Prem exp. Now we are just profiting from this risk that has gone our favor.

Fair comments UL :)

Fact is though they thought they could bully us into buying both of those on the cheap.

We stuck massive prices on both (I remember how the press originally started off talking about £7m Carrick, and a West Ham colleague couldn't believe we'd get £10m for him)

But Levy stuck to his guns both times and got what he wanted.

As you say, they got fair value too, but not the cheap knock down price they wanted.

Same as with Modric, and I'm glad you're coming round to see that £30m is fair value :)

It might be that Levy would up it to £35m, but certainly £30m is the sticking mark I reckon.

I would want around £36m. £20m to buy a replacement and the £16m back we paid for him. However I would prefer we kept in for a long time! He's a wonderful player to have because he can across midfield. Plus he is just awesome.
