Gary Lineker is the face of free-to-air football coverage in the UK. The former Tottenham and Leicester striker has operated as the host of Match of the Day since 1999 and also anchors BBC's live games, including at both World Cups and European Championships.

I wouldn't blame Lineker leaving the BBC. He's been a fine host of MotD, but few would argue that it's probably a good time for him to move on and try other things - and he'll still have the BT Sport gig one assumes.

What he won't miss is the regular grief he gets from The Daily Heil regrading his salary, his political views and their general hatred of the BBC for which Lineker is seen as a convenient 'target' man.

Good, hes a damn site better pundit than Alan "the goalkeeper has absolutely no chance" Shearer and some of the other gormless ex players they have on. I'd love to see Crouchy on there. His podcast can be very funny, as well as insightful into the world of top level football.

At least we'll have someone who's easy to blame when the running order doesn't include us first.

Why not let Gabby Yorath/Logan the gig full time? I can't think of a better sports anchor since Des retired.

I think Jenas will be an awful presenter personally. He's a decent pundit but doesn't have the charisma to present.

Lineker wasn't charismatic as a player or a pundit but he grew into it just by fronting up on the telly every week. I think JJ would be good -- he's bright and still pro-Spurs.

Exactly. When Lineker started he was as wooden as they come. Jenas is very well spoken, clearly quite clever and hopefully will develop his own style. Lineker turned out to have a good sense of humour and be quite good at plays on words.

I don't blame him doing the off though. He takes so much abuse on twitter for his political views its ridiculous. The irony of the people abusing him with the "stick to football" on his twitter while they themselves bombard his threads with their political views and don't just stick to plumbing/selling houses/working in an office ? We are surrounded by cretins. There really is little hope. But good luck JJ!

Linekar should move on to BT and replace that aweful smug patronizing host who quite simply is a very poor presenter.
