I have no idea how to judge the potential of a player who plays in China. The quality is terrible over there. Surely worse than the MLS?

However, football.london understands that while the 24-year-old Beijing Guoan defender is a player Spurs have looked at in the past year, they are not expected to move for him in the coming fortnight.

coming to the end of his contract you say...
Makes sense on a free. Although CB is a weird one for me. We have two developmental types in Tanganga (even though I think he should be looked at as a RB) and Rodon. If we buy another CB it feels like we go for one that can step in and take over for Toby right away.

we can send him on loan as part of his acclimatisation- if he don’t cut it we can make at least a small margin. If he succeeds, he can be given a go at replacing Toby or Davies- I mention the latter given wesometimes play with 3 CBs with Davies on the left of course

Problem is, he’s too old for a flyer. He’ll be 25 next season. He’s in the Chinese league. Any top flight league in Europe is entirely too far a jump in league quality to acclimitize. He’ll have to be loaned out to the Championship here for a season. Makes no sense to me. Especially when we need quality with our limited funds, not flyers.

Ben Davies is the most imposing on crosses / set pieces, but does a very solid job at LCB and is only 27. I think Toby is the one Jose will be looking to find a replacement for, as he's our most experienced / best CB and turns 32 in March.

Toby should be fine for next season, but it would be risky to plan for him being starting XI beyond that. If we assume Jose is happy with Dier, but not Sanchez (or Foyth), both Rodon and Tanganga would need to fulfil their potential in order for us to end up with three reliable CB options post-Toby. If one of them doesn't quite cut it, needs more time, or converts to a different position (i.e. Tanganga to RB) that leaves us a CB short. Signing another young CB with good potential is spreading our bets, so that we only need to count on 2/3 reaching the required standard within the next 18 months.

Why are you so certain that he will need to be loaned out for a season? If that was the expectation, it's probably safe to say we wouldn't sign him - it's not like this is something that Jose and his coaching team would overlook.

It may well just be journalists / his agent rehashing old rumours from the summer though.

Funnily enough, there’s this bloke at Leicester who roughly six months after his 25th birthday was signed from a then non league club to play in the championship.

Yes, I’m aware this is an anomaly but my point is that anything is possible.

Reaching a bit there. I think Ally Gold said previously if we go for a CB we will be looking for someone that will dominate the defence and make it their unit. Someone coming from the Chinese league with no experience in Europe isn't likely to be that person.

It's more likely someone like Skriniar who would be a leader and instant impact. I think we looked at Dias aswell before City signed him. We'll definitely be looking to have Dier and Rodon paired with more experienced partners like Toby and another.

What part of my post is reaching? I started an unequivocal, undeniable, fully qualified fact, and then caveated my ‘hopefulness’ with the mitigation that that pre mentioned fact is very much an anomaly.

My only really point was that Kim being the answer to our prayers was not an impossibility, fully accepting that it was highly unlikely.

Ally gold said we are after a leader and someone that will organise that defence. I don't know for a fact but to my mind I doubt he even speaks English but on top of that he's never been seen in a top 5 league. It was more likely him or Rodon we picked up. The part where this guy might be the leader Mourinho is supposedly hoping to sign is reaching.

Where did i even refer to Ally? I was just responding to my learned American chum saying that he was too old to make the step up from a weak league. My comment is relevant to nothing other than the post I was replying to.

Suggesting he might be the player we were looking for was reaching when you consider Ally's comments.

The one that got away... he's a monster. (not saying screw you levy because I know we can't compete with City)

I wasn’t considering Ally’s comments. I was merely playing devils advocate regarding the suggestion that the step up would be too big, and I’m doing so still conceded that my example was one in a million.

Only reaching being done here is you in trying to find some way that I’ve suggested Kim is the dominant centre back to which Ally refers, as until you kindly brought that to my attention I had no clue he’d said that, and if I had I wouldn’t have cared (no offence Ally if you’re lurking, you know I love ya).

I take your point but sadly it’s just not really anything to do with what I was discussing, and in fact I agree with you that if we’re after a centre back who can come in and dominate then it’s unlikely that this guy is it (though once again, not impossible).
