There's been a lot of talk recently about us possibly bringing in another player to play on the left of our new 4-3-3 formation. At the moment we have Lamela and Townsend on the right but only really Chadli on the left. Chadli so far has been very good but there is certainly a case that we lack depth in this position.
Now in a 4-3-3 AVB seems to like playing with wide forwards who cut inside onto their stronger foot.
We were in for Willian who is a plamaking LWF and some people have suggested that Eriksen is his replacement. However, im not convinced AVB will play him much in this position. Instead i think we will see him much more in the midfield 3 or in the no. 10 position in a 4-2-3-1.
So who do we bring in? At Porto AVB played with Varela on the left, cutting in on his stronger right foot. Varela is more of a wide forward/winger than say a Willian, but with Moutinho playing in the Porto midfield 3 and providing the creativity, a playmaking LWF was not a necessity.
At Chelsea, AVB often played Mata in the LWF role. Mata, although left footed is, like Willian, very much a playmaker who drifts between the lines, rather than a winger. However, was he played there more out of the necessity to get some creativity in the team given that Chelsea's midfield 3 was made up of Mikel, Ramires and Lampard. None of these 3 provide the same creativity that Moutinho provided in AVB's Porto side.
What I'm trying to say is which type of LWF does AVB ideally like to play with? Will we see an attempt to bring a playmaking LWF like Willian (hypothetically eg. Mata, Ozil etc.)- or even play Eriksen out there? Or, now that we have Eriksen who tends to play and create from the midfield 3 (a type of player Chelsea never had when they played Mata at LWF), will we look to bring in more of a wide forward/winger like Varela and Chadli (hypothetically eg. Di Maria, Jackson Martinez etc.)
