If this isn't going to happen, then you move onto the next player in the list.
There is no guarantee he will be cheaper in January. If we are not willing to pay them what they want now, which is up to Levy, then we need to move on to other targets.

The problem is here I think it's more of a Poch 'him or nothing' approach.

This is a world class target, a game changer.

The other targets dont come close imo.

I do find it odd that we're not prepared to spend 40m on a high calibre CB that Jose craves for. But we'd pay 32m plus some add ons.

We've spent similar on players that are more potential rather than current ability.

And we've just spent (possibly) 40m on a striker who will start lots of games on the bench.

You dont get a pop at a player like Skriniar often. ..

Theres no guarantee Inter want to meet in the middle at 40. Just because we want 32 and they want 50 - it doesn’t mean it works that way. He’s on a long contract and if that’s the price they want then they don’t have to sell for anything less

Everyone has a maximum though. If we offered 40 but they wanted 48, you could argue that it's just a bit more there too.

I don't know how much we're not earning right now, but the £8m difference could be £2m/year amortised over a 4 year contract, and that £2m a year could be the entire non-playing/coach staff salaries, y'know?

I agree, but we have no idea how much Inter want upfront. I won’t lie, even though I don’t expect it to happen I will be disappointed as although we have some decent CB’s we don’t have a great one anymore.

I do get it.

I guess we really don't know the figure Inter want. I'm just going on whats being reported and its not a massive gap. If they were wanting say 60m euros yeah, walk away. But they are open to selling, we're keen to buy, the valuations aren't miles apart.

I hope we come to a compromise as he'll be a great fit.

I guess our best bet to get them to compromise is Conte to kick up a fuss about not getting the players in he wants

It just strikes me as one of those 'little bit more' type things.

A guy I worked for years ago was a useful person whose mistakes you could learn from - he was up to his tits in debt due to partaking in the easy finance on offer after the turn of the century. Anyway, he went to a BMW dealer to get an E36 on finance and wanted a coupe, but his mrs pointed out that the cabrio was only a little more, then they went back again to see the cab and found that a 328 with some sort of M-pack was only a little bit more, then on the final visit the salesman pointed out they may as well just get the M3 cab in Dakar Yellow for a smidge more. So he did. And when he chopped it in I believe he ended up with a big fat load of depreciation debt to finance.

You always have to watch out for that 'little bit more' things and stick heavily to your logical limits. I learnt from his mistake that way, and often might see something on eBay and I think "I'll bid near the end" but I tell myself not to - put in your limit at any point, and if it goes for more than it goes for more.

It sounds like it's been left to last because it's one of Jose's lesser priorities - a bonus, rather than a requirement. It's possible that we might go back in if Foyth goes maybe, as it leaves a gap, but I guess we'll see.

That may be true, but if Inter are not willing to budge and Levy isn't going to pay the fee whether it's now or in a year's time, then you can't keep putting it off.
I'm sure Mourinho has other defenders he'd like to sign, that he rates and are top class.

What gives me hope was the ITK earlier that we know the price Inter have told the player’s agent they will accept. Levy will be 10% under that currently and it’s about who will blink first.

I was under the impression from the ITK that we bid what Inter told the agent and then Inter moved the goalposts.

We've bidded what the players agent says we can get him for (according to ITK), so I'm happy for us to stick to our guns on this.

That being said, I really want this signing to happen
