I don't think AVB should be let off the hook for that first half performance either, the players are certainly getting off the hook either, but it is clear from the amount of long passes this was clearly a tactic as in the second half they disappeared and our possession game kicked in.

I can understand that in recent weeks when teams have parked the bus and we struggle to break them down we play a possession based game, and in doing so i think the tactics were altered too much the other way tonight.

To me it looked as though he wanted the team to soak up pressure and counter attack with a second ball or a long pass, long diagonal, it back fired and we were hit on the counter, that and we simply don't have the personnel to do it when Ade is not playing..

He left the change a bit late, when he did though we had close to what he want's in a midfield (playmaker, DM, Box to Box) and it looked good, Negredo for me would be the closest to an all round striker that fits our budget and would compliment our setup IMO.

All that being said i simply do not want to see our defenders lump the ball up top like that again, we are not West Ham under BFS.
AVB will learn, and hopefully he will start to stamp his authority on the dressing room too, some backsides need kicking if we are to get some momentum going again..

That's a bit unfair though, Defoe hasn't done those things (getting on the scoresheet only, mind) lately but his previous goals can't be forgotten.

I hate defending Defoe sometimes especially after performances like today's but for instance, if I was only allowed one striker for the whole there's absolutely no way I would pick Dempsey over Defoe. I'm not trying to big Defoe up, I'm mainly trying to emphasise how poor I think Dempsey has been.
And if u had to pick chlamydia or chlamydia, which would u pick?

That was Harry's call based on information received from his scouting team (as confirmed by himself). Wouldn't fit in alongside VdV apparently. By most accounts Levy was desperate for us to go for Suarez.

I remember him saying something like '' It was decided he wasn't good enough '' or "They told me he wasn't good enough ''. Dont remember VDV being mentioned.

Having watched the Bale goal i was less than impressed by Defoe and his movement, He ran towards the ball bringing defenders across closing down Bales space.
This is why Defoe is a headless chicken and Bale who made something out of it ,is a genuis

Couldn't agree more. He's 29 and played at the top level most of his career. He's won England caps and arguably been coached by some of the best. Given all that, it fucking amazes me how he could make that type of run whilst Bale was doing the business. He clearly should have arced his run to the outside of the CB. It really is basic movement that you would expect any striker or midfield/forward to make in that scenario.

Watched the highlights I recorded from Football First this morning (mostly on x30 speed to be fair). It seems like we didn't create 1 chance in the first half but came good after Holtby came on. Saw some useful touches from him which is encouraging.

Great Bale goal and at least only Everton gained points on us.

I've rarely been more frustrated with Defoe than I was last night. I really, really, really hope we sign a striker tonight.

It's no coincidence Dempsey plays horribly when hooking up with Defoe. Ever since the start of the season I've always wanted to see Adebayor and Dempsey hook up, but he's NEVER gotten that chance, now someone else will get the chance, and look better than him, simply cause he's never played with someone he can link up with. It's such a shame and a waste of a player and he's playing badly at Spurs but only cause he doesn't have a big man to play off of. His world-class form came with ZAMORA up top ffs, now imagine an upgrade on
Edit to add:

It's only so frustrating to a US fan like me, who's followed Dempsey all his career, get insulted left and right only cause his partner is a selfish bastard, harming the team in the process, and harming Clint's chances as well. And only SIX months into the season are people seeing what I've been seeing since the beginning. But by now it's too late, a new signing everyone's fallen in love with has been introduced, and there goes his chance.
I'm not sure that it is all over. While I will cheer when Defoe scores, more often than not he drives me around the bend. The fact is that despite playing with the Spatially Challenged One he has managed to score important goals against the top teams. In fact, I think that he may thrive from Holtby's distribution.
