I once had a drunken conversation with Simon Davies in a bar in Hertford, he told me that it was ludicrous that he was playing out wide as he was a 'brilliant Central Midfielder'.

I was like "yeah...yeah mate you are you know. You should have a word or something."

He was a terrible dresser, terrible drunk, just all round terrible bloke really.

Willem Korsten

Did one good thing and score two goals against Man Utd.

I had high hopes for Mabezala - unfortunately, Khumalo appears to be going the same way :(
In fairness Khumalo is playing regularly on loan for a decent club in a decent league and has just been appointed South African captain, rather than comfort eating himself to the size of a barrage balloon before going missing in the frozen wastes of Norway.

Bongani has all the basic attributes, so if he can add some nous to his game he might yet have a part to play for us.

Milenko Acimovic was likened to Trevor Brooking in one of the daily papers at the time. He came, he saw and then he left.....

it always makes me smile that when everton reached the Champions League, while looking to build and compete in the premier competition they go out and decide to buy....simon davies from spurs.

Brilliant.

Lee Barnard, Mark Gower, Gary Brady, Tomas Pekhart, Rory Allen, Neil Fenn, Lee Mills, Paul McVeigh, Blondel, Dos Santos, Defoe ;)
All in their time with the youth meant to be something special

Further afield there are players like
Airel Ortega (sp) who was the new Maradona (mark 73)
Alfonso Alves
Veron - good player but not as good as the press, and the values made him out to be
Urm Andy Caroll?
Reyes
Jo
Robinho - again good but not that good

One I always thought was over rated for us was tarrico

All my mates thought he was the best full back in the league (even an arsenal fan)

I thought he was utter monkey shit

17 goals 08-09 in his only full season. He was alright I thought.

I agree that is a good return for a striker in a season - i just don't believe he has ever lived up to his hefty price tags

Although that's not his fault, teams have overpaid. The total so far is £55 million o_O

Slightly off topic but I always felt Willem Korsten could have been properly decent if he'd not got injured.

He was considering the noise made about him as a youth, not saying he wasn't a good player just never made it to Messi type billing that was expected/talked about

I don't think you can really take the 'next' Maradona, Pele etc types as all being overrated. There have been far too many that have been labelled with that, and still gone on to be very very good players in their own right. Those labels have been thrown about far too easily. Ortega was Argentina's best player at France '98 before they went out Holland. His club career was a little journeyman-esque and disappointing though I suppose
