As said, outstanding memory for me is him storming away on the break, charging towards the right side of the penalty area and slotting in the equalizer, just after half time in the '91 FA Cup final - he worked his bollocks off that game, that goal really set him alight. Other than that i recall he was a hard working guy. I don't remember too many step-overs, or skinning wing backs, but be honest, 18 ye... i mean 19 years ago, there wasn't that many midfielders doing it anywhere in the UK.

He had a perm too, looked like a scouser.

Paul Stewart played for us when I first started supporting Spurs and in that '91 Cup Final he was a hero. I remember being a nervous wreck watching that game I'd only been supporting Spurs for alittle more than a year and we were already in a Cup final I thought we were the business little did I know the dark ages were about to be upon us bigtime. I don't remember much of Stewart my Da liked him alot though I was only 9 at the time I remember my Da saying something about his **** of a wife being one of the main reasons behind him going to the scousers don't know if that's true or not mind you.

I liked him, but....

He had a hard time convincing some of the fans from day one as he missed a pen against Man Utd on his debut after he'd won the pen himself but took it instead of Fenwick who hadn't missed any in a number of previous matches.

Plus people thought he ws expensive (1.7m if I'm right) which compared to the price for Gazza (2m??) seemed a lot.

Plus he was suspended for the start of the season cos of cards from previously with Man City and I remember some people being pissed off about that.

Plus he had a lean spell and Walsh and Lineker kept him out of the side.

Plus he had curly hair and i remember some people not liking him for that (true....Garry Browne of Southgate, are you reading this??)

but I liked him

This is pretty much spot on...he wasn't well liked for quite a while and was one of the few players I can remember who managed to change the crowds opinion about himself...the conversion to midfield did it and although not blessed with great technical skill or pace, he had a lot of bollocks and worked his crackers off...he was also a bt of a nasty fucker an' all and remember some of his off the ball moments well...

I think that he was a little unfortunate in that his debut was delayed if i remember rightly and he came on as sub against Man U at home in his first game and promptly smashed a penalty against the bar (or did he just miss - its a bit vague now). I reckon that affected his confidence considerably and his goal scoring "form" was affected cos he was perhaps trying to hard.

Midfield suited him better in the end and credit to venables for recognising that. I think most spurs fans remember him fondly and as with most players that leave WHL they rarely do well elsewhere (Berbatov, Keane, Ginola (at Villa), Barmby to name but a few).
