MANCHESTER CITY are leading the chase ahead of Tottenham and Newcastle for 20-year-old Cape Verde defender Pecks.

Pecks - full name Pericles Santos Pereira - has attracted interest from the Premier League after breaking into Portuguese top-flight outfit Gil Vicente.

City are thought to head the race for the athletic centre-back, who has earned international honours with Cape Verde.

Spurs and Newcastle are also monitoring Pecks, but may be put off the youngster after hisclub's president slapped an £8million price-tag on his head.

"The player has a contract until 2017 and we will not sell for a low price," said Gil Vicente chief Antonio Fiusa.

City had been linked with a £5m move for Pecks after dispatching scouts to watch him in action, but reports of a deal being close now appear premature.

But Manuel Pellegrini's side remain frontrunners for his services due to a strategic partnership in place with Gil Vicente.

Without having seen him play ... his stats doesn't look that impressive:

Manchester City, Newcastle and Tottenham are all interested in signed a defender nicknamed Pecks.
The transfer window may be closed, but the speculation never stops - as links in recent days surrounding a player in Portugal's Primeira Liga displays.
The Mirror are one of a number of news outlets to link defender Pecks from making a switch to thePremier League from Portuguese side Gil Vicente.
The centre-back would cost £8 million - with a buyout clause in his contract at that price, with it claimedManchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United are all interested.
So who is he? Fear not, here are five facts on the prospect...
1) His full name is Pericles Santos Pereira, so you can see why he went with the more catchy 'Pecks'.
2) The 20-year-old is a full international for the Cape Verde Islands, making his debut earlier this year.
3) This season he has made two appearances for Gil Vicente, 13th in the Primeira Liga, playing at the weekend in their 2-0 away defeat to champions Porto.
4) Pecks has in total made just nine professional club appearances, scoring once.
5) He shares an agent with former Premier League flop Andre Santos, and Chelsea prospect Wallace.
