"Coutinho played under Mauricio Pochettino at Espanyol and has maintained a great relationship with the Argentine coach. A source close to Coutinho told ESPN FC the chances of a return to England this month are "low" but not impossible.

A move to Spurs is complicated, though, and would depend on a number of factors. Christian Eriksen would have to leave the club -- with United interested -- while deals for Giovani Lo Celso and Bruno Fernandes would have to fail to materialise."

That last part makes no sense to me. We'll only sign Coutinho if Eriksen goes and we sign neither or Lo Celso or Fernandes? I thought the idea was to strengthen, not just replace.

It makes perfect sense if you follow what we normally do in transfer windows.

Don't think this means anything, but it is interesting that Barca are in Miami right now for a preseason friendly against Napoli. Hope this doesn't mess with Levy's vacation too much...

He's a much better player than either Lo Celso or Fernándes for me, losing Eriksen and getting him in wouldn't be as painful

Who is this guy except for being a journalist and entrepreneur?

Never heard of him before. There's been so many of these foreign journalist who get tweeted into the English market this summer, its hard to keep track.

If the loan fee amounts to the first installment in an eventual option to buy set at a reasonable fee (say a bit more than what we're being quoted for GLC and Bruno but nowhere near what they paid), I don't see why that'd be a roadblock. If they're holding out for £100m or whatever then we might as well move on but I'm not sure there's much of an indication that they are.

Ali Z on Coutinho copied over from the ITK thread:

Certainly Poch's first choice, do I see it happening, No

AND

Think financials are doable, just too late to get it done IMO, plus him and Eriksen are pretty much same player where as Le Celso and Fernandez could arguably play in same side as Eriksen, don't think Coutinhio could and we have no bid for Eriksen last I heard.

I have to say I disagree with his assessment. Coutinho is not a metronome like Eriksen, he's a dribbler who gets assists and scores goals from long distance. Much more similar to Bruno than Eriksen for me, so if we were lining up Fernandes as an option to pair with Eriksen I don't see why Coutinho couldn't fit in as well.

Yep, Lo Celso and Coutinho sound like the best mix imo.

I think the point is we want two and Coutinho may be thought of (right or wrong) as too much of a like player to Eriksen for us to make that move and leave the other two alone.

I thought the same - they're similar position-wise but quite different types of players. I wouldn't say Coutinho's style of play is any more different to Eriksen's than Fernandes' style is to Eriksen's.

Coutinho always seems to sign for us in Football Manager so I'll take that as a sign it's gonna happen for realsies.

So we've agreed to personal terms with GLC and Fernandes but we're we can't up our transfer fee by 10m, so now we're in for someone on 300k/week that Barcelona want 90 million pounds for?

I just don't get how that makes sense. And I thought we didn't do loans?

Coutinho just landed in Miami with the entire Barcelona squad. They play Napoli tomorrow in a friendly. Logistically, I don't see how this deal gets done easily, as I can't recall a single instance where Spurs have signed a player with a medical pending well after the transfer deadline or where the medical takes place outside of Europe. There just doesn't seem to be enough time to do a deal like this, including the fee complexities.
