Not true. They can be cleared for the squad but not fit to start. It depends how much time they feel they can play. If they feel they have 60 mins they can start but they may be only fit to come on for 30 mins. It depends on their fitness levels after a layoff. Although Romero may be in better shape given his length out compared to VdV. So we'll see but absolutely would be happy to see VdV and Romero start Sunday. It's just we have a quality fully fit center back available too now.

Mate, if they both start they are fit

Simple as that, no need for long winded speculating.

So what about his first game in the world cup? What about Kane in cup finals? It's just not true if a player starts doesn't mean they are fit.

No idea what your point is....the coaching staff are in a much better position to judge this than you.

You're not privy to anything behind the scenes.

Well neither of us are so do we just not give our opinions? Also still not true about the coaches as my examples prove. They can only make their judgement on what they see and try to determine if they are fit enough. The point is a player can rush back too soon and not be fit enough to start. That's a fact and not an opinion.

You're still not getting it.

They're in a far better position to judge than you are (or any of us)

Doesnt mean they are infallible but there's a reason you hear managers talk about final training session/fitness tests before making a final decision on a player before matchday.

Sure give your opinion, but Im taking the coaching staffs opinion over yours everyday of the week.

Bloody hell I've only suggested he might not be fit enough to start and now I'm getting a bloody lecture. Like anyone else we just give our opinions and that's mine. None of what I've said has suggested I know any better than the coaches. There's clear examples of players rushing back and the fact Romero has history of it shows its not certain even if he starts. If he starts and proves to be fit I'll be delighted. When you get reports saying "Romero is desperate to play against Utd" it suggests he may be is rushing back is all. Having 2 players start just back from injury is going to take a judgement call which may or may come off no matter what they see in training.

Kin hell, not lecturing you, Im disageeeing with you.

And you know less than the coaching staff, as we all do, glad you've finally acknowledged that!

Finally acknowledged that
Yeah way to go proving my point. Obviously you don't have much self awareness for how you reply to people then.

I have a feeling we will have Romero, VdV & Dragusin to pick from for UTD. If Romero is touch and go, then at least we have the other two to give Romero another 2+ weeks to recover. I feel all three will be in that matchday squad. Maddison could also make that squad if he has no setbacks. Would be amazing to have those options with no Son, Sarr or Bissouma.

Cristian Romero, James Maddison, Ivan Perisic and Manor Solomon remain our longer term absentees, while captain Heung-Min Son (Asian Cup) and Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma (Africa Cup of Nations) are away on international duty.

This was what was said prior to the Bournemouth game...

Oliver Skipp could return after he missed the Seagulls defeat with a slight knock, but long-term absentees James Maddison, Ivan Perisic, Ryan Sessegnon, Manor Solomon, Rodrigo Bentancur and Micky van de Ven all remain out.

So I guess we'll have to find out on the day. Unless there are Ange quotes that categorically say certain players out.

I actually don't remember the club/Ange giving any real indication on length of possible absence. I might be wrong. But as far as recall it was always very vague comments like "looks like a bad one" and from there people assumed a 5-6 week absence for themselves.

At the time he was asked about VDV and Maddison and said "yeah...kind of January, Bentancur similar." which at the time was good news because the original reporting was 2/3 months which led everyone to believe February at the earliest. Beyond that no time frame was given but nobody expected beginning of January given the original reporting or Ange's tiny update at the time.
