To me Sanchez sums up our recruitment policy in recent years, big money (was it £40m+) for a raw talent that hasn’t improved. Either the coaching staff was poor or the criteria was flawed. He’s a trier and an athlete but nowhere near good enough for a team challenging for the league.

As others have said, he has all the physical tools to be an absolute dominant centre back for us. I think his weakness lies in lapses of concentration, which lead to mistakes, and then causes him to lose confidence and become hesitant in his decision making. If he can improve the mental side of his game he really could be excellent but I feel it’s make or break for him this season with Mourinho at the helm.

IMO, the whole confidence/decision making/mistakes thing forms a loop which is hard to break. A bad decision leads to hesistancy which leads to mistakes and so on. Some players don't seem to let it bother them too much but some really struggle to get past it. At the moment it seems that every Sanchez clearance goes straight to an opponent. What he really needs is CM players to make themselves available whenever he has the ball to give him easy options and build his confidence from there.

Sanchez can still become a fantastic CB, He is a natural defender, what he needs to improve are concentration and cut out the 1 or 2 mistakes, usually on the ball, per game. He is still a pup in CB terms.

I’m afraid I’m going to disagree, in the last 5 years he’s played around 180 games for club and country, I don’t see where the improvements come from

I could say the same about Rio Ferdinand at the same age, and he turned into a world class CB. Central defenders get better as they mature.

Yes you could say the same about Rio, but Sanchez will never be in his class unfortunately

Hopefully King can can help out and get not just Sanchez stepping up a level or few

Was the West Ham or Leeds version of Rio Ferdinand that much better than Sanchez is now? He certainly made as many mistakes! Then he joined Man U at 24 and played there for nearly 12 years. And it was when he was 27+ that he became world class.

Rio was in a different league to Sanchez when United signed him from Leeds. The suggestion that he wasn’t is utterly weird. There’s a reason Fergie paid so much for him. We’d struggle to get half as much for Sanchez even despite transfer inflation.

I’ll give you the West Ham version, but he improved massively at Leeds which is why Utd bought him. Obviously he then went to another level at Utd.

The issue I and others have with Sanchez is that after several seasons and 2 managers we can’t actually see any real improvement from his first season.

This is the point, when we bought him there was a rawness but due to age and inexperience I was prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt. But he hasn’t improved and I don’t think he can or will.

I get that he hasn’t kicked on, and if anything his best form was his season alongside Verts when Toby was injured a couple of years ago. Part of the problem is that he’s constantly in and out of the side, and with a different partner each time. The best defences have the same centre backs most games and hopefully Jose will decide on his soon. I don’t see any problem with CB’s playing 2 games a week for sustained periods.

Funny how good he looked playing at RCB with a great experienced defender like Vertonghen alongside him for those 4 months when Toby was injured, now he has to play alongside Dier or at LCB with Toby who's lost his pace.

Best one we have to deal with fast forwards like Aubameyang, Vardy etc. Good tactical option, he regressed similar to Dele but he's still useful.
