I think that Sanchez is currently a valid player to be a substitute. He is still young, perhaps he needs to have a high quality CB by his side to be able to learn a little about his position. Dier and Toby today are more reliable than Davinson.
Dier and Toby pairing is too slow.

They can be slower, but they give more security, Davinson seems to play in fear at times.

maybe but how quick is Sanchez? I keep on reading about his pace and raw attributes but can anyone give a couple of examples or even one of him showing real pace. I could be wrong but I think it’s more perception. He didn’t look that quick running back with Rondon a couple of years ago or when he miss timed that header against Arsenal on the half way line he didn’t make up any ground on Ramsey and Wanyama from my memory. Even over short distances Martial breezed past him for the penalty(he was square on and flat footed when Martial took the touch granted but still poor defending but he didn’t show a burst of pace).

I think as long as you have athletic full backs and don’t squeeze up to the half way line you can get away with having slow/average paced centre backs. What you can’t get away with is poor decision making and basic errors.

Tbh I'm not gonna go into each incident where people wanna critique his defending because you could find several incidents involving Dier since after the lockdown. We made richarlison look like Messi in the opening game and had they taken their chances we would of been on the end of the a heavy defeat. I for one don't wanna see us start parking the bus like arsenal because we're worried about the lack of pace at the back

Depends on the opponents.
Yes it does but even teams like West ham and crystal Palace have pace in attack so there's not many teams where you can get away with that pairing unless we just play with a low block.

Davindon's issues are not pace he is plenty quick enough - but for me he gets into some awful positions as a defender he doesn't seem to read the game very well at all . Look at the goal against West Ham he needed to be side instead he ends up facing the ball he can't know what is behind him and ends up panicing. . He has the attributes to be good but as a defender he is reacting and not controlling to often

I’m not a massive fan of Dier either if I’m honest but would have him in front of Sanchez. My point was more I don’t think Sanchez has great recovery pace either and if he does I personally haven’t seen it. whether that’s to do with body position when defending maybe but I’ve never seen real pace(happy to be corrected with examples) and if that’s the reason we should be playing him shouldn’t it stand out more?

The thing is ultimately last season when we had Sissoko and Winks protecting our back 4 and still we had the 7th best defence in the PL. This season we currently have the 3rd best defence in the PL, and this shows every team currently has defensive issue's and there ain't many great defenders around at the moment. Liverpool have conceded 14, man utd 12, chelsea 9, unfortunately the grass isn't any greener on the other side.

So @Mark_147 what is his biggest issue, if you have given me a doh for the one about his passing and ball playing capabilities? Are you really suggesting he is the perfect footballer and has none? I personally want someone who can also play decent football within the Spurs team.

My only real issue with Sanchez, which is actually true of pretty much every young centre back with pace, is that his anticipation isn’t good in terms of ball winnability and so he often seems to react to slowly either when someone is running at him or when there’s a contactable ball. It comes off as too casual but in reality I think it’s just that his reading of situations near him needs to be recalibrated.

Agreed, but I can see Jose selecting Sanchez to start when his superior pace can benefit the team. Dier is quicker than most people seem to give him credit for, but Dier + Toby is not a quick CB pairing. Will be interesting to see where Rodon fits into that equation too.

What I'm suggesting is CB pairings need to compliment each other in order to get the right balance. If one defender lacks pace you try to pair him with a defender with pace in order to compliment the others weaknesses. I'm looking at it from a team perspective while you are looking at individual players abilities.

Not the point I (maybe not others) was making at all. Think you are getting overly hung up about the whole subject tbh. ?

He’s just been awful now for months. He has no awareness defensively and gets caught out all the time. He’s not good enough.

He either needs a loan to play every game and see if he kicks on, or needs to go. But he can’t play week in week out anymore.

Shown so much patience with this muppet but yeh I’m done.

Over commits leaves crazy space and relies on speed to get him out of trouble.

In a back three maybe not the in a back two ever and a day.
