Of course he has - the Portugese league is a much higher standard than the Championship. Come on mate that is ridiculous to suggest otherwise.
The top teams in Portugal are great but beyond that are you sure?

You know the Championship brings in double the revenue of the Portuguese league. Sure that doesn't mean it's better but money talks and the Championship is a tough league.

I give up. This is ridiculous. The Portugese league is rated as the 6th best in Europe.

Been dreadful tonight as if he’s not the messiah many think he’s still very raw reminds me of a much poorer Kyle walker
Going to be depressingly hilarious if in a year or twos time we he’s yet another player we will be struggling to shift for the amount we payed. The fact Levy brought him in for Conte when Conte needed a quality WB is shocking really.

Yeah I know and tha premier league is rated top, I couldn't find a rating for the championship just England.

What I did find it that the championship pulls in over 800 million dollars in revenue and the primera 400.

Look I think Porro is better, I think Benfica, sporting and Porto would win the championship ( beyond that though...) But my point is don't right players off after two games in a position that doesn't suit them just like loads have done with Emerson. I mention Porro because he was atrocious Saturday in a position that was his and it would be ridiculous to write him off .

I'm not writing him off at all, I'm saying he clearly isn't ready for the premier league RIGHT NOW.

People need to calm down and stop drawing conclusions. Assess at the end of the season where he’s at as a player overall and assess individual performances from individual matches, there are some wires getting crossed between these two things in this thread! He’s a young player and clearly has talent, so let’s all be patient and see what he becomes over the next 12-24 months. It doesn’t have to happen overnight here, we have Emerson and Porro already and this loan will do him a lot of good

Yeah - it's barely been a week since Spence was being lauded as a the second coming for the highlights package of his Rennes debut, and now he's suddenly an absolute liability and isn't anywhere near ready.

The whole point of the loan is for him to get these mistakes out of his system, develop as a player and get some serious minutes. Better to assess how he's done come May rather than this see-saw of AMAZING/SHIT that he's on at the moment.

Mate calling anywhere a farmers league is just disrespectful imo. How much Portuguese football do you watch?
Just because a league has a big revenue doesn’t make them great leagues it just means they have more resources.

This is it.
He's neither "shit", nor is he the "Messiah" and nor is Conte "clueless" for not playing him. All things I've seen said on here, pretty much.

What he is, is a young player with potential who needs to learn and improve certain aspects of his game.
He may succeed, or he may not but this loan should show us a lot...when it's finished.

It's fine to look at and make small judgements on each game but it doesn't need to be such finite, sweeping statements.

It feels like people are so desperate to be proved right, or prove other people wrong, that any clarity of thought goes out of the window sometimes and it has to be a decision NOW!

Agreed and it was hyperbolic but it's not a million miles away from the championship.

Money does talk , I should know I haven't got any

I would just add - I don't think anyone said he was a bad player, or would never make it, or even that it was a bad signing - only that Spence was not ready yet, and this was not a Conte Conspiracy to not play Spence.

That last part would appear to be true - given not just the recent performances, but also that he has been training with Spurs since July, and obviously still has work to do.

Now that he is on loan - we should not be reacting positively or negatively with each performance. It's a process, and it's best judged at the end of the process. Let see what he learns, and how he comes back next summer - not being ready now does not mean he will not be ready ever.. I am pretty sure everyone is rooting for him to come good.

Will be good in a few seasons not currently what we need. Just like Skipp a season long loan some where could see him really mature as a player.

There's a big difference between "not ready to start" and "not ready to play any minutes whatsoever" though.

He has defensive flaws that are magnified when he's a RB and not a RWB. He's also clearly a much bigger attacking threat than Emerson Royal as a RWB. So I still find it crazy that Conte didn't use him even when we were chasing games and had to throw caution to the wind, especially when he's complained recently about "We have different characteristics. We don’t have many players who are really good to beat the man." Giving Spence 10-15 minutes at the end of games we're chasing makes us a more attacking team at the cost of defensive stability, which is the normal trade off you make to try and get back into a game.

I mean we've seen Deki at RWB when we've been chasing games before and he's not a good defender.

That's the part that's odd. He offers us something Conte has complained about us lacking this season, as an attacking sub off the bench generally and as a good one on one dribbler specifically. We've seen some weaknesses on this loan so far but nothing that makes that make sense to me, he's clearly more talented offensively than Emerson.

I would love to see what happened in the alternative universe where he signs for Dortmund or another PL club.

He is actually not - at least yet anyway.

He has a lot of great physical attributes, but he does not yet have the end product. I've posted his stats from Championship a few times in here - they are not great by any stretch. So, a bit like a younger, skinnier Traore.

The advantage Spence has is that he has time to improve that aspect of his game to go along with his physical attributes.

Last year, in 3400 minutes in the Championship, Spence had 19 accurate crosses. Royal had 18 in 2300 minutes in the premier league.

Porro had 32 accurate crosses in 1500 minutes this season (Spence has 0 in 300 minutes across all competitions this season)

In one of the aspects that Conte has complained about explicitly, the ability to beat a man one on one, he is a definite upgrade on Royal. There's more to attacking than just crossing. Spence had 2.5x more assists per 90 than Emerson did last season, although we're not talking about massive numbers for either (0.04 vs 0.1). Spence had 2.36 shot creating actions per 90 to Emerson's 1.97.

I'd also say that it is easier to have accurate/successful crosses if you're crossing to Harry Kane.

Of course Porro is better than both as an attacker, no debate there.

Why didn't we just loan him back to Forest last summer? To others here think he would have continued to get picked for Forest?

Hard to say - they bought Neco Williams to play RB on July 10 for £17M, while we signed Djed Spence on July 19 for £20M.

I am guessing if they really wanted Spence, or Spence really wanted to go there, that was a deal that could have been made early in the summer, before we signed him.

Indeed, we don't get tell clubs they have to take our players, I wish we could though..
