Are you just looking at stats or what they actually represent. Look at the goals he scored that season. The majority were in the Europa league. The other goals were in games either already won or lost. I think maybe one was a goal that actually affected the result of the game. Great technical abilities? Ok
Numbers are numbers, Kane's scored goals in the Europa League, son too. Do you look at Lamela and see no technical ability? I'm not saying you're wrong, it's subjective, but the talent's always been there for me.

Err the recruitment after bale left got us challenging for the league and champions League final.
Which recruitment specifically? Soldado? Lamela? Capoue? Fabio? Stambouli? Njie? Sissoko? Jansson? Sanchez?
We’ve made some great signings, Toby, Eriksen, Dele (at the time), Son and Wanyama to name a few however it’s been more miss than hit...i don’t disagree we’ve progressed to the point where we’ve at times looked like title challengers (all too briefly mind). I don’t feel that it was a direct result of recruitment as the main reason for me was Harry Kane. I’m still confused how we made the CL final, that was amazing but any honest fan will admit we really rode our luck to get there. My point was that we had a chance to recruit better so that we have a squad capable of being up there for the next 10 years. We struggled two seasons ago, we failed miserably last season and there’s a good chance we’ll fail to get CL this season....

I see a very average footballer. Kane got his chance in the league through his Europa league goals I seem to recall, that and Soldado’s poor league form. But Kane has gone on to be a world class striker and our main man. Son was a bit of a slow burn, but he took off after his second season. Kane and Son have proved their quality time and time again. I’m scratching my head how Lamela has been defended so much, must be missing something.

He had all the talent at Roma, and I don't think he lost any of it, it's just that he hasn't had the ability to consistently train or play matches to live up to the potential. I think a lot of people have defended him because there's a "you're only as good as your last game" thing. He's been brilliant the last two games, so he's being defended. It's impossible to defend him over his whole career except for injuries, which sometimes are uncontrollable. And then that he always gives his all for the team, which can't be understated. He hasn't had the chance to live up to his potential because he simply hasn't been available nearly enough, but when he's played recently, he's shown ability. Maybe he'd be a lot better if he wasn't injured as much, but it's impossible to prove this hypothetical. So I'm just happy he's played really well recently and justified his place in the starting XI until someone forces him out or he gets injured (fingers crossed he doesn't).

Same as Soldado, really. Passion.

People who love the club love the people who fight for it - especially when they've every right to act like they don't care.

He gives everything when he plays, and seems prepared to be hated by everyone else in order to help us win a game.

I enjoyed the latest Jose quote describing Erik:
"a little bit sometimes chaotic"
I think it’s a great way to describe him!

When you watch the players on TV nine times out of ten the players attempt to play the pass you expect them to, with the exception of Lamela and Ndombele (but he’s just a baller)! Sometimes it drives you nuts because he doesn’t play what would seem to be the obvious choice but on other occasions it’s brilliant!

The problem is it’s probably hard for the rest of the team to work out what he’s going to do too ?

Chaotic or not if he’s fit I’d have him in the team ahead of a number of others all day long ?

I fancy him to get on the scoresheet against City. He is becoming the player he was always threatening to be but for the horrific injuries.

You said the Bale money.
Erikson Lamela Toby and all the other signings moved us forward.
We've been regulars in the champions League until Poch last season.

Hardly a glowing reference speaking about his performance in a game we lost. My take on Lamela is based on his 8 years with us not one game where he played decent which we lost.

It becomes a glowing reference when you take into account that it was also the first time our offense was that prolific since that 6-1 victory at OT at the beginning of the season (not only when it comes to goals, but also scoring chances created), which he also happened to start (just a coincidence, I'm sure). But if you want to pretend that those five defensive mistakes which gave Everton the win somehow take anything away from Lamela's performance, then be my guess, you're the only one who's going to look silly as a result.

And my take on Lamela is also based on his whole career at Spurs. If he was as average as you claim he is, Spurs would've never offered him that second long term contract.

I did say the Bale money, what’s your point?
Eriksen improved us, I don’t believe Lamela did though. What do you mean when you say all
other signings? My point again is that I feel the majority of the signings since the Bale money has been disproportionately bad. We’ve improved yes, we were in the CL 4 consecutive seasons but had the recruitment been better we could’ve sustained a top 4 position for the next 10+ years. Look at how Arsenal and United have declined during the same time. We had a chance to exploit that decline by building a squad capable of being regular top 4 challengers. Minus the CL run we’ve been awful in the league since Jan 2019. We were fortunate to make the CL from the 18/19 season, failed last season and looks like we need to win the Europa to get CL next season.

Yeah sorry but I feel you’re just clutching at thin air. If you want to celebrate mediocrity go ahead.
You’re making out like his performance the other night was like Bales hatrick at the San Siro. Lamela is not our match winner, he’s not our game changer, he’s a guy who generally gives his all and has been found to not have as much quality/end product as hoped for when he joined us back in 2013. No I wasn’t expecting him to be Bales replacement, I just hoped he would’ve been better technically and have more of an impact on our side.

No need to apologize, we clearly disagree heavily on this issue and that's totally okay.

Anyway, I really hope this club decides to keep celebrating mediocrity, as you call it, and offers Lamela one last multi-anual contract to wrap up a great career with us!

I'm sorry but he is the ultimate shithouse and I absolutely love it. Nobody else in our squad puts this pointless effort in when we're 4-1 up in a Europa game.

Anyone who wants him gone ahead of the likes of Lucas or Sissoko is wrong and I will die on this hill.

He's just one of those players that even if it was just a kick about with mates would be laying it all on the line.

I fully expect a 50 year old Lamela to be getting involved in lads vs dads match and little Hernan needing to be airlifted off the pitch to the hospital cause Lamela refused to let the 8 year old have time on the ball
