The head injury he suffered against Ajax finished him. He hasn't been the same player since.

Still can't understand how he went from what I considered his best season with us last year to this.

Respect him for the way he played. And he seems like a nice guy. A shame he couldn't keep it up for a couple more seasons. I was thinking he would go Italian being a brilliant CD in his mid 30s.

Yeah it really is strange how he’s gone off the boil so quickly.

I thought he‘d be playing and partnering a younger centre back like Sanchez.

And centre backs can go on until early to mid thirties usually. He’s only 32.

I think that should be flexible to a certain degree.

Jan has given the full prime of his career to Tottenham. And been a truly superb player in one of our best periods as a club.
That's my thinking too. Especially as 10 years is much harder to do in the modern era because of the reliance on foreign talent - they'd have to move to the club at a young age. We're Jan's only English club, he's been loyal, he's done 8 years, and I'm sure he'd do another 2 if he was still good enough to start for us which he sadly isn't. That'll do for me.

Not been his best season, but I still think he has a couple more years in him, I think he will move elsewhere and do well, would love him to stay as a squad player (Europa and cups, as we could have lots of games next season and a big squad is needed), but his been linked with some good moves Man City, Inter Milan, think the slower pace of the Italian league will suit him.
Love the guy, roll Royce of a player

I don't think he's lost it. I just think he's out of form and out of the team. I'd have no issue with him extending another 2 seasons

As others have said, I thought last season was possibly his best season and his performance against Dortmund was one for the ages. Strange how his legs seemed to go almost overnight, that nasty facial injury vs Ajax may well of played a part

He’s still got a few good years in him, especially if he goes to Serie A or back ‘home’ to Ajax. I hope he gets a testimonial, or at the very least an opportunity to say bye to the fans once they’re allowed back

Meh, I love Jan. At his best an absolute Rolls. Hugely underrated in the wider world too. And, let's face it, there aren't many people in our club or following who haven't had their frustrated moments over the years. I love the guy.

Yes. I would have had more than a sulk with AVB, given his habit of crouching down on the touchline and whistling at players like dogs.

Should go down as a club legend, he was a worthy replacement for King when he joined from Ajax and has been an absolutely terrific player for us. Sadly he’s not been the same player the last 12-18 months. Such a shame we haven’t been able to give him a proper send off with a big crowd. We already owe Michael Dawson a testimonial, I wouldn’t be surprised to see one for Jan once he eventually retires

This. He just needs a proper run of games, victory games, to get his mono and confidence back. Which unfortunately he does not get under all the circumstances. Dier went through the same patch but he's regaining what was lost after restart. Unlucky guy.

8 years of service with us when he could have left many years earlier, or even joined others right from the start, not sure what others would want more from him. Will fondly remember him.. Super Jan.

I hope he plays against Palace, gives a masterclass of a performance, and scores a goal to sign off. That would be truly magical.

Really sad knowing today will be the last Spurs game for Jan Vertonghen. For 8 years , he made the left CB position his own. In his prime, he could have gone to a far better side anywhere in Europe, for more money. But for one reason or other, he stuck with us, honoured his contract and gave 100% every single time.

There has been not one anti-Vertonghen story in press, never to get into any offfield issues - one of the best role models this club has had in decades.

Super Jan - After Ledley left, we somehow found him. I don't know who is fit enough to take up the mantle after these 2 greats....

It is such a shame, he leaves us with no trophies. I hope a generation down the line, Spurs fans remembers this era of great players we have had.

Vertoghen served our club well. He was a better wing left back than CB if truth be told. Let's be honest he was involved in some of our heaviest defeats and imo failed to step up and be captain at one /some point. I thought his partnership with Sanchez was great but like most defenders once your defensive shield no longer is there ie Dembele Wanyama to protect or bail you out, you are left exposed. Unfortunately for Vertoghen he lost a yard of pace and wasn't dominate in the air. Saying all this if I had a choice between Alderweireld or Vertoghen to stay I would pick Vertoghen because of balance in our defensive make-up.

One of my favorite players in the modern era. Sad to see him go, but thanks for the memories.

He's been a great player for us, but I do think he's lost a yard of pace & seems to be reactive in his defending, rather than proactive, so maybe it's time for him to move on. At 34 he's not someone you can build a team around for the next 4 or 5 years.
