I've heard stories of youth players being on ridiculous amounts of money, even more the the figures reported of Tanganga latest rejected offer.

Chelsea pay some of their 16-18 year olds as much as if not more than that and they are nowhere near the first team.

£15k a week? That’s an insult in today’s game when you consider what a big talent he is and how good he has been.

Firstly, I wouldn't get too hung up on a media report. Even if there's any truth in this story (and we have to allow for the possibility that there isn't), it's likely that the reality is far more nuanced than Eccleshare makes out - i.e. that £15K per week is the basic pay but that there are all sorts of bonuses that would take it up to twice as much, as is the norm at Spurs.

Secondly, Tanganga is still young and has achieved comparatively little. Far too many young, English players at big clubs find themselves on far too high a basic salary far too early in their careers. It's one of the reasons why so many of them fail to progress. Let's have some perspective, £800K per annum basic pay (and maybe £1.6m after bonuses) is still a hell of a lot of money for most people of any age. And remember that Spurs has a clear policy and history of rewarding young players with frequent (yearly), big pay rises as they establish themselves. I prefer such an incentivised strategy than a blanket high basic pay regardless of performance.

Lastly, this is a negotiation. We know full well by now that Levy will never jump straight in with a top end offer. And so does Tanganga's agent. Interestingly, Eccleshare doesn't say (or hasn't been told by the agent who doubtless leaked the story to him) what Tanganga was asking for. I wouldn't be surprised if the agent's opening demand was for something in the region of £60k per week for his client. Which would be no less "shocking" than Levy's reported opening offer. But, as the tweet says, both parties are still hopeful of a compromise. They know how this works. In other words, it's all quite normal.

Nothing to get concerned or annoyed about.

Yet!

Unless I’ve missed something, the Athletic are fine for opinion pieces (ish) but have absolutely no contacts or insider knowledge. I sincerely doubt Charlie Eccleshare has any way to find out the details of Levy and Tanganga’s agents discussions. It’s made up bullshit.

Am I alone in thinking £15k a week is good for someone who’s played very little games?

The Spurs beat writers, including the Athletic ones, will build up contacts and get fed stuff from the club and agents at times. It’s part of their job to build up that network.

I think it very likely that Tanganga’s agent will have said something. I can’t imagine that Eccleshare would have conjured the story out of thin air.

However, it’s only one side of the story - and full of spin. The reality will be far more nuanced.

Well given that I’m yet to see the Athletic accurately report or reveal anything, their writers are pretty shit at that part of their job.

Was really pleased to see him back in the bench. I do hope there are no contract disputes with this guy. Think he will be long term answer in our defence.

He really hasn't shown anything to justify a massive pay rise. 15k with performance related bonuses sounds reasonable. If he progresses hell get more.

The problem lies with what he can get elsewhere. There’s a reported number of decent clubs looking at him and if they’re offering him say £25-30k per week then unless we’re competitive in our offer he’ll go elsewhere. Say this was Davies, Foyth, Lamela etc then I wouldn’t be bothered if they left. Whereas with Tanganga he’s young, very promising and can develop into an integral part of our 1st team/squad in the very near future. To let him go would be madness and very costly indeed.

Which is how it should be, I think Tanganga team might force the issue here and get him a larger contract than he probably deserves right now but it'll end up causing him to lose out on a big bumper pay packet if he does kick on imo because if he wants more pay he'll have to add some length to the contract which'll likely see him miss out on a nice incremental bump.

We won't pay 30k a week if he hasn't shown he justifies it yet and may never justify it. It sets a precedent. Any player plays a few first team games will expect the same whether they are worth it or not. Chelsea are now in a position where they are paying decent prospects 80k a week. The can afford we can't.

They won’t. My point is Tanganga is an exceptional talent and very versatile. We can’t afford to lose him. Out of of current crop of homegrown players he’s top of the pile in terms of being good enough for the 1st team with Skipp not too far behind. Parrott’s not ready and the others are miles away.

15k is fine but when someone is willing to offer you more, then 15k becomes a bit moot
