Yep this is why I'm caveating any response with it depending on what the actual issue is.

Sounds like he has the quality to step up to the U21s, but if we haven't done that I'm assuming there's a fairly good reason.

As others have said, maybe we want him to sign a contract before doing that. Plus if he's making any demands about playing in that team, it again removes the incentive for himself to prove himself worthy of that step up.

Fair comments, and you can understand that to a degree (our policy of not promoting those refusing to sign contracts) but I think we could have actually incentivised him a little by giving him u21 football this year regardless, it's not like it's the first team and the U21's have been desperately short on attacking flair this season. I think it would have been a decent compromise without losing face.

What I'm saying is, I don't think this is necessarily just about money. Alli is a great example because he was playing first team football aged 16/17 at MK. Edwards hasn't even been given u21 football at Spurs.

this could well be as much about him feeling like we aren't progressing him quick enough as it is about money.

And I think to a degree he has a point. I think the only reason he hasn't been advanced to the U21's is purely his size, and I can understand that to a degree, maybe the club are trying to protect him, but I think those days are over where size should stand in the way of exceptional technique and ability. We were also slow to progress Pritchatd for the same reason IMO.

Of course, being offered stupid money won't hurt either.
maybe maybe not, may 23rd bday still just 22 and had some injuries impact his progress. think his loan was before poch was in and you have to consider mason only made it into the squad at 22?.

He *might* turn out to be a world beater but, he's only 17 so he probably won't. It's a punt, however much it feels like a good bet we shouldn't be treating him any different to Onomah etc. We've clearly shown that we are willing to reward progress and commitment and we should continue in that vein even if it comes to losing a quality player every now and again. I am sure the club are offering him the best terms they've offered a 17 year old if we think he is worth it and, if he does decide to go elsewhere, fuck him

We are treating him different to Onomah though - at his age Onomah was regularly featuring for the u21s. Considering he arguably has greater potential it is strange to see him stuck in the u18s when he's displayed such form for them for the last few months.

Certainly for a game or two if he's that good.

Hopefully it's something that can be sorted out either way. Would be a shame to lose him, unless of course he's being a dick about it in which case I don't really care.

He does still sim quite child like in physique unlike Josh, might be why we don't think he's ready to step up just yet?

On what basis does he have more potential than Onomah? You or I don't decide that - Poch and the academy staff do. And giving an 18 year old a 20k a week contract based on nothing more than what they've shown in training is a pretty powerful statement about what rewards you'll get if you show you're good enough - and Edwards and his parents really couldn't wait a year or two before getting a contract that would set him up for life? If he proved good enough to earn it.

Whatever he does, I hope he doesn't end up like Sonny Pike and manages to fulfil his potential and has a great career, but I can't see how going somewhere like Man City or Chelsea would help achieve that, unless there's about to be a seismic shift in the cultural attitudes of both those clubs in relation to playing young players instead of just buying whoever they want.

A lot of guesswork in this post. You or I know nothing about the issues in this contractual debate - let's not make shit up.

Also look up the meaning of the word 'arguably'. ;)

but i don't think there is a club which is more suitable for young players to develop than spurs at this moment...

In talent terms, for sure.

But if you were a parent feeling his talent was innate and give low heed to nurture then your perspective would be about the cold hard wedge.

I thought the rules that players his age could only sign contracts that are a maximum of 2 years in length?

If that is the case and he did sign in december he'd be able to leave in 2017 anyway.
