Sissoko is our Swiss army knife, always good to keep around.
Swissoko?
Sissoko is our Swiss army knife, always good to keep around.
I believe he does this under instruction. It's not just his lack of technical ability.
His positioning is atrocious. He insists on playing in some weird defensive right midfield role, leaving whoever else is in their with him with the responsibility of covering the rest of midfield themselves. If he does play, it has to be right of a 3.
I enjoyed this typo/autocorrect.I think he’s one to keep, he’s the only CM we have who is a proper powerhous, him hoyjbjerg, winks GLC and nodbelle is a good mix.
If we replace him it needs to be with a similarly powerful player but one who is also more tenchnical.Yep he needed replacing a good couple of seasons ago. I struggle to think of a less technical player that has appeared for us in the last 30 years. Even Freund or Zokora we’re better on the ball than him. I think we will look back on him playing with us as a key part of the missed opportunities the club has suffered on the pitch. The CL final handball error should of been the final straw.
If we replace him it needs to be with a similarly powerful player but one who is also more tenchnical.
The problem is that we all want a Dembele replacement, but he was unique. A fit Dembele made players like Yaya Toure look limited (at least in the first two thirds of the pitch). If we replace him it needs to be with a similarly powerful player but one who is also more tenchnical.
Thank you Johnny, I’ve been saying this for so long. He’s just not good enough and we ain’t going anywhere with Sissoko as a key player in our team. I said he should’ve been sold last season but the consensus was that he was the main man and ran things in midfield which I found pretty laughable. Now we’ve got a player who is only going to decline, wrong side of 30, no real market value and a waste of 30 million. Oh how I miss Moussa....Describing Sissoko as "not world class" is an epic understatement.
I don't agree he "always does a job". He hides from the ball, he can't pass very well, he definitely can't shoot, and his positioning isn't brilliant, because he's not a defensive midfielder.
I love the guy's attitude but I wonder what could have been if we hadn't had to rely on him in our midfield for so long. I'm not saying he offers nothing, but he in no way belongs in a top six midfield.
I wish we could combine his attitude with someone else's skill. He can run and he's strong and a great attitude and that's about it. He's so, so poor technically, and I feel we're always playing around his limitations, which massively compromises our effectiveness.

Hello Timberwolf, I like your thinking and agree with you completely. One of my main issues with him would be when he’ll win us the ball back which is great, break up oppositions attacking play, run with the ball then play a stupid pass and we’d be on the back foot within seconds. I just expect him to play the wrong pass or not execute the right pass almost every time now. Sabitzer or Laimer from Leipzig would be amazing. The way Leipzig schooled us was mighty impressive. 4-0 on aggregate actually flattered us in the end.Even though it was only against Ipswich, we looked so much better in midfield with Hojbjerg instead of Sissoko. The sad thing was, Hojbjerg didn't even need to do anything particularly special - he simply made himself available, got the simple passes right, tracked runners and read the game.
I think people find it easy to forgive Sissoko as he runs non stop and has the odd eye-catching run, but he does so much of the simple stuff so badly it really holds back the rest of the team. If we can get rid of him while he still has value and put the money towards someone like Sabitzer then it's a complete no-brainer.
Hello That Wanyama Goal. Yeah he honestly has ridiculously poor composure and technique for a top level player. He always takes too many touches, broadcasts every pass, gets the weight of pass wrong and put it's behind his man and I swear he passes the ball straight out of play when under no pressure at least once every single game.Hello Timberwolf, I like your thinking and agree with you completely. Touchè, yeah I would like to focus on the positive players we have, I mean our attacking options are great on paper however our defence and defensive midfield is holding us back. Sissoko has a great engine and that’s really where the compliments end I’m afraid to say. Hojberg is a tidy player and should improve our ball retention this season I hope. I don't want to shit on him as I like the guy and he runs his heart out every game and has improved a lot, but you're only as good as your worst player and he wouldn't get close to starting in central midfield for many other teams in the the league, let alone the top 6.
Happy to keep him as a squad player but I'd be a happier man if he never started a game for us in midfield again.
His habit of hiding winds me up more than even his lack of ball control and inability to pass or shoot.Describing Sissoko as "not world class" is an epic understatement.

I believe he does this under instruction.
In recent time our left back has been defensive while Aurier gets forward a lot. So we get an athletic midfielder to cover for him.
I get that Sissoko isn’t top quality but he often does a thankless task.
I get that he has limitations I just refuse to criticise him for following an instruction. When you play in a midfield 2 then you simply cannot spend most of your time covering the right back position.
We were left with Winks as our only body in centre midfield last season on numerous occasions, which was was one of the main reasons why we shipped so many goals.
As a central midfielder I would have loved for my role be to cover the full back as it is way easier than dictating play, scoring goals, protecting the back 4 etc. In fact it is a perfect way to hide from any meaningful responsibility.
Sissoko has his moments and I like him as a person but his limitations restrict us so much in much the same way as Aurier.
I agree that he is probably under instruction to cover Aurier but this should be in addition to many other contributions not his main one.
I do wonder if his character is a big part of why we keep him around. But he's not just a "C" because he's pushing other players to hit higher grades. His influence in the team is hugely undermentioned - he is a leader in the squad. People forget when we played him with Winks how much he protected Winks on the pitch. He practically gave Winks and Aurier a platform to do what they needed to do. It may not have worked tactically but that was what he was asked to do.
If him being around the squad as a leader figure helps Gedson, Skipp, Tanganga and Bergwijn develop as more confident stronger players then I'd gladly keep him.
If players like John o'Shea can be kept at United as a squad player and win numerous titles, I would gladly keep Sissoko as a back up midfielder to come in and do a job and help out youngsters progress
