Yeah, true. Just a timely reminder of how wrong everyone on SC is apart from me.
Or how injuries and illness (plus other factors) can change things in a year. One is now a CB and the other a CM.

Things change over time. Just remember how many wonderkids don't actually become stars fulfilling their potential, and others unexpected surpass it.

It's why you shouldn't use past judgements as something to beat someone with. Dier at the time seemed the better player. Liverpool had since kicked on, Henderson found his feet and Dier had injuries and illness to contend with.

It was the world Cup that defined the difference between Dier and Henderson. Henderson can receive the ball on the turn, Dier can't. Up until the World Cup i was convinced Dier was more effective, but every time one was subbed on for the other three difference in ability was so noticeable. Dier was always a CB being asked to play in midfield. Mostly this was OK because for us in that system he'd drop between the CBs, split them and become a 3rd CB

Højbjerg seems to be able to receive the ball on the turn, so is immediately a much better prospect in actual midfield than Dier ever was.

All true, but Henderson was a very good midfielder two years ago. He hasn't all of a sudden become a different player, he's just now getting the recognition he deserves because he's the captain of a successful side.

Anyway, going slightly OT...

Don't think he is that good but it's important to support the manager and do business early. Can see him becoming club captain in couple of years, great professional attitude.

What's also important is he genuinely seems to feel he's made 'a step-up' and made a good career choice.

Sometimes with these welcome vids the players are parroting PR lines. Hojbjerg appears to be fully on board the good ship lillywhite with his natural delivery.

I'm a bit into this stat site today, but I found this quite interesting. Comparing winks and PEH stat wise. So to read the chart you need to know that winks is black and PEH is colours, and that the numbers are not raw stats but percentual of all CMs in the top 4 leagues with over 10 games. So if you have a 90th, it means you top 10% in europe at that particular stat.

So, what I see here is, the different kind of players they are, and also they could actually complement each other. Winks is really good at one thing, holding onto the ball. He is rarely dispossessed, all his pass stats are great apart from chance creation, and, contrary to opinion he passes forward a lot more than people realise. Really top stats n that regard. However, his weaknesses. tackles won, and successful pressures in particular. Namely, Winks is very good as a pressure reliever in the defensive position, less good at the ball winning elements of it, including closing down.

PEH shows, interesting stats, his dribbling is good and for his role he creates a lot of chances, now I think some of this is contingent on how Southampton play, but he has defensive stats all round. Where he struggles is passing accuracy, though a change of style might help him here, and also he is dispossessed a lot. Again, Southamptons style influences this, but this is a bit worrying as taking the ball under pressure is a major part of being a DM.

But combine the players and you'd have very good player, so they might really complement each other, particularly in games where we need to defend.

So, on top of the fact he's a talented footballer, he speaks eloquently, seems genuinely happy to have joined us, and gets to spend his days here, while the rest of us slave away in offices, building sites, sweat-box homes...

A net outlay of £3m for this guy is the deal of the decade. He will be massive for us and I’m so glad we managed to sign him. A player like PEH is one of the missing pieces of the Mourinho team puzzle.

I said that a while ago, that I reckon Højbjerg will allow Winks to play his natural and best game.
It made the Winks haters come out in force but this stat wheel thing (even if my brain switches off a little when looking at them) seems to prove that they'll potentially make a good little partnership.

It's why I was surprised and a little disbelieving of the ITK stating that Winks might look to move, following the signing of Højbjerg.
I think it'll free Winks up and we'll only see him improve.

Not sure why, but never seen this view of Hotspur Way before - absolutely breathtaking.

Now I understand and actually believe it when new signings like Højbjerg mention how impressed they are by the facilities.

Other than the obvious defensive contribution, I think one of the massive reasons Jose was so keen to sign him was for his leadership, professionalism and willingness to work for the team/follow orders.

Every great Mourinho team has had a midfield general: a player who will do exactly what the manager wants and make sure everybody else does too. This is huge for Mourinho and also something we've really lacked in recent years. None of our current midfielders (or even previous greats like Dembele) seem like great communicators or natural leaders. This is something PEH has in abundance and I think it's a side of the game that's often overlooked.

Contrary to popular opinion, I don't think that our pre-PEH senior midfield players are that bad. What was missing was a satisfactory partnership - there was no two of the bunch that really complemented one another. I think Pierre is more than capable of forming good partnerships with pretty much any of the others and I also think Winks at the top of the list to partner him (with GLC in front of them). Hopefully Højbjerg gets through the whole season unscathed and then Skipp comes back from a loan ready to understudy/rotate next season.
