Interview from Danish TV2 today:

When there is uncertainty, it can well trigger some thoughts, says Højbjerg

Pierre-Emile Højbjerg at the national football team's press conference the day before the European Championship qualifier against San Marino in Parken.

The Danish midfielder has played just over an hour in the Premier League this season.

Last season, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg was indispensable at Tottenham. The Danish international got full playing time, almost every time he was on the pitch, and he missed just three Premier League games.

At the beginning of the current season, however, Højbjerg's situation has been quite different.

Tottenham has got a new manager, Australian Ange Postecoglou, after two temporary coaches and Antonio Conte, and rumors of a possible Højbjerg exit from the London club have buzzed like the buzz of bees.

- It is clear that when there is some uncertainty, it can well trigger some thoughts. But now it is closed, there is a clarification, and the focus is in the right place, says Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, who was linked with a summer transfer to Atlético Madrid.

- I always think that the focus has been in the right place, but when there is uncertainty, it can well trigger some thoughts. All the way through, of course, I have behaved properly and done things correctly, so I don't come with a backlog.

- So that way I feel good and I keep doing the things that I think are right. So for me everything is okay, says Højbjerg.

Will help the team in the best possible way.

In the first four league games this season, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg has only had a total of 66 minutes.

However, the few match minutes do not make the midfielder change his mentality.

- The team has done fantastically, and when I have been called upon, I have tried to help the team. At the end of the day, the most important thing for me is to keep helping the team in the best possible way.

- Then it is the coach who is like the boss. He more or less decides how much to play. My focus, who I am and what I give is not going to change. For me, it is always important to be successful with the team - regardless of whether I play 1 minute or 90 minutes.

- If the team does well, you stand better yourself. This is something I will continue to take with me - also in this situation. I have a good feeling in my stomach and I will try to improve, where I need to improve.

But it doesn't suit a guy like you so well to have to sit out on the bench, does it?

- Time will tell, says Pierre-Emile Højbjerg.

There's nothing to spin. No one hates him they just prefer the team without him in it. No issues with commitment or application just not the same standard as other players we have
That’s not true, there are plenty of posts here criticizing him for his attitude, blaming others for his errors etc. Go back and see. He’s also gotten more stick than anyone else when the whole team played badly even if he evidently always gives everything - and there are people here who think he is terrible (not just not good enough but terrible) on the ball. Oh yes, he runs in a funny way too and his enthusiasm is fake.

Its a great attitude to have, fair play to him.

Getting pretty sick of this lazy tag of 'haters' as well.

The vast majority who don't necessarily rate him or think we have better options don't hate him ffs.

Most fans will always give a player the respect he deserves for pulling on the shirt and giving his all, which PEH does.

But that doesn't mean we can't critique in a respecful way or think other players are better options for way we play.

Its not hating to have that stance and its fucking lazy to not understand the context of most people's views on this.

Everyone wants him to contribute to the squad this season.

Compare and contrast to Jadon Sancho.

Wow
To be fair to Sancho his Manager said he wasn’t training well or trying hard in training and if as a player you feel that you are giving 110% then that would really piss you off, quite different situation to PEH imo.

Yeah but is he giving 110%, I doubt it.

Very rare for a manger to come out and say that unless there's some kind of attitude problem.

I doubt ETH is saying that publicly if there's not some truth in it.

I agree with you in the use of “haters” in general. And of course it’s fair to say that he doesn’t fit the team, isn’t good enough etc. But PEH do get an unusual amount of if not hate then at least very unfair criticism from a not insubstantial number of people. You’re clearly not one of them, but just look through these pages.

Whether he's good enough for this system or not, Pierre is made of good stuff and i find it strange the amount he gets dug out on here.

Sorry but you keep guys like this in the squad. He knows his role now, so you use him however you see fit over the course of the season until he decides he wants a bigger role somewhere else. As a squad player, first rate.

Just seen this, but no surprise. I've argued before that there is a role for him to play here, albeit not one that is going to see him start many games. Let's call it the Milner at Liverpool role. 3-1 up, 10 minutes to go, how many times did we see Milner come on and just sand-bag it?

I'm sure Hojbjerg wants more than that, but he's just not suited to our new system. He'll be a model pro though, and a great example of how to act when you are waiting for a move away. No tantrums, no leaks, just head down and work hard.

I doubt he'll ever really fit into the system as I don't think he's got the right skillet but this is great stuff, what a pro!
