that was before hauling him off at HT. is there any coming back from his awful performance? we need our squad players to come in and give us a kick, unfortunetly Mason is just not good enough

Poch playing a 50% fit Mason everytime over a 100% fit Carroll says a lot.

Mason has been the weakest link for sometime now...we lost it against Arse when I came on for Lamela, we lost it when he came on at Chelsea and yesterday he was awful...no strength, no ability going forward, got dispossessed several times....time to go son!

Unfortunately, Mason doesn't have the characteristics to be a mid-2 player. I was dubious with him at the start of this year and even more so now. Would I sell him? Probably, I think it is the best solution for both the team and him. Our squad depth next year has to be so much better.

You didn't watch all of last season then? When he was our best midfielder and kept Dembele permanently out of the team.

He's clearly a player who needs to be upgraded this summer, I think that much is clear, but he's also our longest serving member and we should treat him with respect. He always gives 100% unlike others over the years, even if that hasn't been enough.

He is a good player, but he has struggled for fitness this season and does not slot easily into our revised system. He was much better last term playing as a double pivot with Bentaleb (though I still think he has more to offer as a number 10). This season Poch has shored up our previoulsy leaky defence by playing Dier as an auxiliary centre-half and has pushed up from the back using Dembele as a ball carrier to break forward. Neither Mason or Carroll is a natural in either the Dier or Dembele role. Bentaleb could perhaps be adapted to cover for Moussa, but Poch seems to see him more as a Dier understudy.

However, I think people are unrealistic in assuming that an immediate upgrade is on the cards. I suspect that we are going to struggle in the market place to find a midfield player who could slot straight into Poch system, and even if we find suitable they will need to undergo the Poch re-education programme, which can be a lengthy process, and in some cases does not take.

I feel bad critiscing him

He's a good player, he works hard and you can see it means a lot to him

I just think he's not good enough and never going to be good enough to provide top quality cover for a squad hoping to be a CL regular

The best thing for his own career and for our quality squad depth if for him to be sold and replaced in my opinion

I wish him all the best but I want the best for the club and to me that requires us upgrading on him as an option off the bench and to cover the injured
For a club like us to have top quality cover when we are not in the CL regluarly is difficult, we only wheeled at Wimmer in the odd cup game before Verts injury, then Wimmer came in and did a great job but still saw Verts take his place. That would put a lot of players off I think.

Ryan Mason should be playing in an advanced midfield position supporting the striker - he is an Alli back-up not a Dembele. Unfortunately he is not in the same class as Alli and he is constantly playing with injuries. I've been a long-time supporter of the lad but I don't think he is going to ever be a top-class player now and his performances have been awful lately.
However he is Spurs through and through so I wish him all the very best for the future.

While I agree that he's probably better in a more advanced position, he still lack the quality we should be aiming for in such a position.

Thats the level of quality we need though

Someone who can step in for a first teamer like Wimmer with little to no disruption to the playing staff

It's difficult to do I agree, but Wimmer as a case in point proves it is not impossible and Mason simply isn't of the quality that enables us to bring him in without dratically reducing the on field quality of the team

We need to upgrade

I'd say in midfield it's slightly easier to rotate too, much like Davies and trippier saw decent game time from full back positions

The CB pairings are ones you usually want to keep consistent, more so than in CM in my opinion so a quality back up player would likely be afforded more game time over the course of the season than Wimmer has been

guilty!

why is he playing then?

Yeah, I've seen a lot of people using this as an excuse but I'm sure we have the specialist knowledge at the club to know whether he is fit enough to play and to play at a required level. There's no way he'd be selected if he wasn't.

I do agree with whoever it was who said he is an Alli replacement and not a Dembele one. There was a time when it was Mason who was the only one who was looking to play forward balls to Kane in the team but now we have Lamela and Alli who are both doing that a lot more and more successfully than Mason.

I was literally just going to say he may not be bad to keep around for the Europa games and see if he develops  At the moment he's not good enough to start league and CL games and not even to come on from the bench as a matter of fact. It would be good to see if he could develop but I'm not sure if we can give him the time. I know Bournemouth are in for him and to be honest when I envision that move and him playing there I can't help but think it would be a good fit and that may be his level...

He's been injured and has needed an operation since Christmas. Would have had one it if Bentaleb hadn't been out too. He's been playing hampered and in pain all spring. So it's really unfair to judge him in any sense on the last few months.

Does pain cause a player to lose his skills, technique, positional sense, balls and intelligence? I dont think so. Thst is just a pathetic excuse for a player truly out of his depth.
