Unfortunately I would have thought such a pre-emption would be much more formalised than that, and - given my distant dealings with such things - more often than not have good faith provisions plastered all over them.

It will no doubt have to be a bona fide offer with a purchaser who has instructed agents/lawyers and agreed heads of terms on a deal.

These things are tricky to game.

(I deal with these in a commercial property context, but can't imagine they're wildly different).

This is the type of opportunistic signing that it would stupid for us not to take as/when they present themselves.

No point worrying about Buy Back clauses and the like just yet - who knows if RM will even execute it (rumour is they are going big on Camavinga and Mbappe moving forward so funds may be tight), as well as the LB options that will be available/ fresh on the scene 2 years down the road - where we will have the best part of €40M burning a hole in our pocket.

Allegedly the 'buy back' is more complex than you'd think, benefitting us.

It is suggested they can buy back for €10m more than we pay for him, as long as it's within 2 years, but... if another team offers more, they'll have to match it.

I think that judgement is a matter of opinion. What if Madrid have any injury crisis at LB and in January say “right, we’ll have him back thanks”? Even though it would be good financially it would leave us a bit screwed.

Still, I accept there’s different ways of looking at it and he looks a real player in a position we need to upgrade in, so still a good signing.
