If we do get Sergio he would be a welcome upgrade on Davies. Let's not make this a reason for playing a back 3. It rarely works and we lose an offensive player. Really hoping this signing goes through

The only difference though is now we actually have two excellent attacking fullbacks. This hasn’t been the case in years.

So now we actually can gain an offensive player by going 3 atb.

I don’t think we go there as the norm, but you cannot overstate how big a change Doherty/Reguilon is from Aurier/Davies in attack.

If it helps I’ve been slagging him off for years.
He had a purple patch a couple of years ago, I’ll give him that. But he was average before that and imo worse since.

...and I don’t care if the room values him. I think he’s awful and gave groaned so many times when attacks and promising moves have broken down because either his cross is useless, he gives the ball away, or makes the wrong pass.

Laugh it up, fuzzballs.

We all slag players off. I do it loads. I just find it weird when it’s done at a time when we’re all super happy and looking forward to this new kid. This is a great thing for Davies and I wouldn’t mind betting Davies is looking forward to it.

I'm sure it's probably been said but this deal for me represents a seismic shift in attitude from Levy. I couldn't see him going near a deal like this previously (buy back clause) without it being championed by an established winner like Mourinho.

Can't wait to see this guy play for Spurs.
Absolutely. And also the intent. Have mentioned before - signings of such calibre, the same applies to Bale, underlines the ambitions of the clubs and that resonates through the league that we meant business.

And know what, United failed and we succeeded. That could be a huge slap on them. And this could not be the first time had Bruno signed for us, had Dybala come to us, and I am sure if we were more concrete with Van der Beek, we could also stand a chance.

This double blow of Reguilon and Bale for United will garner us the respect - is unthinkable 5 years ago, and I fully applaud Levy in backing Mourinho for the club to stand tall in transfers with smart dealings.

I don’t know how to put it clearer. I really genuinely think that Davies lowers the overall quality of the first team and more often than not does more damage both in defence and attack than good. Agree or disagree that’s what I think.

So when I read that we’re replacing him with someone who appears to better then I’m happy that a player who I have targeted for years, who has also made me doubt Mourinho because he seems to rate him, is finally finally finally getting replaced.

If I could decide Davies would be sold and Sess on the bench.

Assume he doesn’t have to quarantine?

Everything seems to suggest they will both need to, based on what has happened with other clubs this window.
PL players have had to (e.g. Rodrigo at Leeds, Gabriel at Arsenal)
Reason James Rodriguez and Allan didn't have to was because Allan was coming from Italy, and Rodriguez was actually coming from, and had spent previous period in Porto rather than Madrid, both Italy and Portugal not being on the list at the time, unlike Spain.

They will be able for an exemption from Government to train though (although separate from rest of team).

Based on that first game they may be eligible for would be Man Utd, the weekend before the next international break.

That’s fine but that’s but for me it should be done in the Ben Davies thread, not in a Reguilon thread.

That is also where Doherty shone at Wolves, as a RWB.

We currently have to players who can be relied on at every position on the pitch.

When Mourinho said he wanted a balanced squad, I think this is what he was talking about.

Sess needs to go out on loan and play regularily - not sit on a bench - potentially playing starting less than 15 games this year - I agree Sess has the potential to be a very good player for us - but looked lost last season - whereas davies no matter how much your hatred for him is a much more solid back up at this moment in time than Sess and as most have already aluded to Davies gives us a back up for left centre half if we are stuck.

Totally agree. 12 months at Leeds with Bielsa would be great?

Got no problem with the buyback clause in theory but I'd have thought Levy would have asked for a bit more, unless it expires. Supposedly it's a €30m transfer fee with a €40-45m buyback, meaning a 33-50% profit margin, but that's based around a relatively low COVID influenced fee this time around. If there is an inflation to the pre-COVID levels, in a world where Harry Maguire and Aaron-Wan Bissacka transferred for a combined £135m, then this represents a pretty small fee for a player who, if wanted by the biggest club in the world at the time, would most likely have played particularly well in the last few years and have proven himself as a top LB.

If it was say €70-80m buyback so we'd at least double our money, or if it expired after a season or two (even went up in steps?) then I'd be much happier with it.

Thought a report yesterday said buyback expired after 2 seasons.

Double announcement? or hold one back 24 hours for the extra publicity.

This fella is exactly what we’ve needed at left back. Interested to see how we fit him and Doherty in the same team. Maybe Tanganga becomes the reverse Davies in a lop-sided back four. Or 5 at the back if we play them both?
