Levy low balled Carrick with wages, United came in and tripled them
Big club - small club
Where on earth has that ever been said? I suspect it hasn’t.

Even now we can’t match Utd for wages, but we have enough else going for us. However, in 2006 we had only just finished top 6 for the first time in 16 years, and Utd even after 3 fallow years were still by far the biggest club in England being managed by the greatest manager of the premier league era. I’d suggest that even if we’d offered Carrick double what Utd were he’d still have gone there, and rightly so.

Utd also went on full tap up assault. Neville presenter Carrick with a Utd shirt with his name on it at the World Cup training camp. Ferguson spoke about him in the media. It was only ending one way. The only mistake we made was replacing Carrick with Zokora, who while a decent enough player was clearly not right for any side intending to play good football.

I distinctly remember Carrick saying that he and his agent went to see Levy with the intention of negotiating an improved deal - the wage increase proposed being moderate - and Levy turned them down. Up until that point Carrick had never considered leaving, but his nose was severely put out of joint and United came in for him.

Can’t find the quotes online but if you can be arsed/ are that invested in this particular point, please be my guest. I’d be very surprised though, that’s very out of character for someone like Carrick to reveal anything of that sort to the press.

What's he going to say "get your head down, work hard and you too can reap the rewards. There were times when I wanted to quit, but I found the strength of will to keep going and now look at me, I've got a League Cup runners up medal on my mantle piece at home. You play your cards right and that can be you in 10 years time. But if you keep up this disruptive, angling for a move away, bullshit, then you just might live to regret it. Look what happened to Berbatov, Bale, Modric and Carrick and let their stories be a lesson you!"

What do you mean ‘are that invested in this particular point’? Someone posted a point about Carrick, you said you doubted that what he had said had happened, and I merely recounted something I had read or heard many years ago that backed up his view.

I mean if you feel strongly enough that this really happened, as I’m saying it didn’t, then I will humbly accept being proven wrong, if you can be arsed to do so, as I tried to prove myself wrong but have been unable to find the quotes.

I’d also suggest there’s a difference between paying some what you’re able to and ‘lowballing’. We were and are smaller and poorer. But that’s moot as, like I said, I don’t believe Carrick made the comments you attribute to him. If I’m wrong then I’m sure they’re easy to locate.

Edit: having checked, all info suggests we in fact offered him a new deal which would’ve made him our joint top earner but he was desperate for the Utd move. There are stories going back to Christmas time of his final season suggesting we were trying to tie him down off the back of breaking into the England squad regularly but Utd were already making advances.

Swap for Dybala? ?

It'll never happen but I think if we swapped Tanguy for Dybala, it'd be for the net benefit of the team (unlike some of the other swap deals mooted). We desperately lack creativity that he could bring.

But yeah, more likely is we sell Ndombele for £50m and sign Ryan Fraser on a free.

I won't post the actual tweet to give it any coverage but someone is fake nicking as ally gold talking about the ndom-dybala swap. Just so nobody else gets fooled.

Just cant see it...

We need to convince Dybala to come to us without CL. And we have to pay up fee & salary -not happenning.
Only way is, if we agree a loan+ (compulsory) permanent buy with image rights paid.
Again - cant see it

I doubt Juve interested in Ndombele swap

It’s not going to happen, and I’m not even remotely trying to suggest it is. BUT if Juve were so keen for Pogba to return, but he looks settled at Utd, isn’t Ndombele not the next best midfielder in that mould they could go for?

I bet you Pirlo would be excited to try and mould him, plus it would steal a march on Inter if they got him too...

Anyway that’s as excited as I’ll get because it still falls down on wages and image rights, and if that was too much to get past pre-pandemic, I don’t see it changing now.

Okay apparently Juventus really need some money - so not sure how swapping Dybala for Ndombele helps their cause. Nice idea though.

I'm not saying it'll happen at all but like we did with Southampton between KWP and Hojbjerg, and Barca/Juve did with Pjanic and Authur, making them separate deals, rather than straight swaps, changes debt and player amortisation on the balance sheets.
