On another recent thread (about Man City fans) posters were talking about fan-bases, and which of the premier League clubs had the largest. As it wasn't the main subject of the thread, I thought it best to start a new one.

One of the ways to approximately calculate relative size of fan-base is to count the number of unique visits per month - from all over the world - to each of the club's websites. This is useful for marketing purposes, and ComScore World Metrix produced the following figures for the 2007/8 season.

Top Ten
Manchester United 912,000
Liverpool 887,000
Arsenal 718,000
Chelsea 402,000
Tottenham Hotspur 319,000
Manchester City 204,000
West Ham 203,000
Everton 194,000
Portsmouth 93,000
Fulham 74,000

This obviously doesn't reveal size of fan-base per se, but does give a useful indication of relative size.

Best of the rest, the Fourth CL teams international fan bases have exploded in the last few years. So much exposure through CL football (not to mention continiously being the top teams in our domestic league, which is now a huge globally marketed product)

Man City's money aside I would suggest we are the best equipt team to challange the top four long term, City can build if they continue to invest at the rate they have but I figure teams like Everton and Villa will only get so far with their workman like efforts and strong team units before they hit a glass ceiling.

True we may also never be able to break through to the top four, but (maybe with a sprinkling of bias) I do feel we are in a stronger postion to do so in the long term.

For the so called second city, why are there so few prominent Brummies flourishing in our society?

It's bizarrely been noted before and linked to the accent. It's regularly voted the most unattractive within the UK and it's suggested that people don't take people with a Brummie accent seriously. I can kind of see what they mean

Another view to consolidate our position as 5th best supported club is to view the best teams data @ fantasy premier league

i lol'd at the city fan who thought that because the search of manchester city returned more than tottenham hotspur that they were more popular...

did they not realise that half if not more of the results would have been about the city of manchester? and not the club?

The most accurate way of finding out how large a clubs fan base is, is by shirt sale's. This will give a better view of proper fans that will make a difference to the club. Rather than the African and Asian supporters who "support" whichever team is winning that week or who have a player they like playing for them.

If a second rate yo-yo team like chelsea can then anyone can!

As the fan base estimates are based on web site visits I'd suggest that it is a good measure of new and young fans; older fans tend to be less likely to visit the web site so naturally the CL teams would be higher.
Does this mean that our fan base is aging? Probably, I doubt many kids around the world have leapt on the Spurs bandwagon recently.

no. clubs like man utd and newcastle every fan has a shirt. some of the lads at man utd wouldn't wear it to a game but they'll have one they wear on other days. a lot of spurs fans are 'too cool' for colours.

to the OP, the website thing might be largely affected by how good the website is. and how good unofficial sites for the club are

Yes, that's quite right. I suppose many fans go to the OS for official announcements and the like, but good unofficial fan-sites will reproduce them soon enough anyway. It's an inexact science to say the least - just an indication I guess.

Interesting topic. Does this then mean that successful Brummies tend to make an effort to lose their accents or that Brummies simply aren't successful?

Their accent alone has probably put off many investors.

Try quoting Shakespeare in a Brummie accent. He would have never got his foot in the door.

without a doubt the quality of the OS and unofficial sites is important

I often get the spurs OS stories on here - it's easier -

SC is a destination site - I'm on here on anyway to cheer everyone up with my wit and wisdom :) so catch the OS stories while I'm here

of course OS visits are a good barometer - but you need a range of indicators to build up a reasonable inditor of fanbase

pre their lottery win my own gut feeling is that City's fanbase would have been much smaller than ours

a few years in the CL for them and several more trophies than us doubtless it would be bigger - it's something we have to fight as best we can
