what a ridiculous thread, the majority of teams who go down find it extremely hard to get back up then they have to rebuild from scratch again... We can't afford that, its ridiculous to even think winning any cups would make it an ok season, we get relegated (winning cups or not) its our worse season since the premier league began simple as

Stay up.

I very much doubt we'd go straight back up, I don't think many of our current players would have the stomach to battle successfully all season long in the championship!

I'd snap your hand off if you could guarantee a treble at the cost of relegation.

It's not as though we're gonna win the PL next season, or even challenge. So you'd sacrifice the glory of a triple cup win so we could finish midtable in the premiership for the next god knows how many seasons?

Cos, Spurs would still exist if they were in the Championship. And we could still go to the games, and still enjoy watching Spurs. And we'd most likely (though not certainly) be involved in a promotion race, so that'd actually be quite exciting.

Course a treble and staying up would be better.

That's a very narrow view. The ramifications of relegation are stark. Here's a little perspective:

In the Premiership era, only seven teams have been played every season: Man U, Liverpool, the Scum, the Scum Mk II, Aston Villa, Everton and us.

There's more:

Since the Premiership started, 29 teams have been relegated. Of those 29 teams, only two have managed to gain promotion and stay there, without being relegated again. Every other team that has been relegated from the Premiership has either never regained Premiership status or has been relegated at least once more. Palace have been relegated four times.

Being relegated is serious. Glory in the cups is wonderful and is a source of pride, but there are practicalities to consider. If we get relegated, according to historic performance we would either never regain promotion or, more likely, become a yo-yo club.

And finally, if we were relegated, grasping three cups, how would we be able to fund our new stadium on Championship revenues?

I honestly don't think there's a question that we'd come straight back up and if we didn't, we'd manage it the next season. And we could always postpone builing a new stadium.

Besides, we're Spurs, not Palace. A couple of seasons in the wilderness tops, and then we come roaring back to mid-table mediocrity in the PL.

Getting relegated would be shocking. I cant believe some of you would take 1 years joy for many many years of misery and asking yourself "Whyyyyyyyyyyyy?".

The standout implications would be..

- We'd lose 80% of any talent within the squad. A lot of you moan about Jenas and Zokora now, if we were in the championship, you would be over the moon to have Ghaly and Boateng.

- Getting promoted really is not as easy as you think. We would not be a premiership club in the championship, we'd be a championship club in the championship.

- Best case scenario - say we were promoted back to the EPL. We'd have a championship squad that believe it or not would struggle to stay up. The process to get to where we are now, with the capabality to chase some of the most talented players in the world, and world class prospects, the chance to build a 60k capacity stadium and play in europe would be a re-building process that would take up to and beyond a decade.

This thread is an eye opener to me of just how lucky we are to have the players we do and be in the financial situation we are in.

You guys need to take this a bit more seriously, relegation would be like the END of the THFC brand and what we are all about. Our great history that we talk about every 2 seconds would vanish given the plight we would find ourselves in. Look at leeds, they went from CL semi finalists to a team we now refer to as league 1 strugglers with no name in world football.

Maintaining a premier league status comes above winning ANY trophy and qualifying for europe. Thats why it was the right decision to sack Juande at the time, saying he deserved more time could have cost the club its whole future, and something Levy knew and was not willing to take a risk on. He bought in the one person that knew the league inside out and had a history of helping clubs avoiding the drop - thats what we need to do. Get our fingers outta our arses and damn well stay up.

EDIT: FFS. Dont belive for a second that if we got relegated that we would 'come straight back up'. This is the attidude that has resulted in us under achieving and not pulling our weight in recent years/months/weeks. We dont have a divine right to be in this league, you cannot live of our history, that was then, this is now! Leeds must have thought the same thing, but then Ferdinand left, then Keane, Robinson, Kewell, Viduka, Smith and slowly their team was dismantled. The same would happen to us, theirs no two ways about it.

Spot on. The prospect of relegation is terrifying. I had a dream a liitle while back where we had only 5 games to go and we had to win them all to stay up. That was frightening enough. I hate to think what I (and every other Spurs fan) would go through if we were relegated.

I vote for the Middlesbourgh option, lose in two cup finals and get relegated (now that is a wonderful season)

Typical Tottenham!

To be honest though, if we did win all three cups we wouldn't get relegated aswell, you can't be in amazing form in cups then play shite in the league, it doesn't work like that.

Anyone on this thread who would take relegation in exchange for a few cups must be f**king demented. We're wouldn't be consistent enough to come straight back up anyway!
We need to be safe before the last game of the season as I really can't see us going up to Anfield on the last day and getting anything from it!!!!

Milkman, are you sure about that!!?
At the moment we're still in all the cups, albeit we haven't played amazingly well, but we have still won, however we're still doing crap in the league!!

The problem with cup games is that there is probably less pressure on players because you have to go for the win, so the players try everything and anything. Whereas in the league you have to be consistent!! Something we just can't do very well.....at the moment!!

But going back to the original question, we have to stay up for sure!! Winning a cup is a bonus, but Premiership football means everything and the repercussions of falling into the Championship are just unthinkable..........anyone remember Leeds!!! :-o

what would happen if we won the Carling Cup, the FA Cup, AND the UEFA cup, but then got relegated? there would kind of be a bittersweet taste wouldnt there? how would people take this?

i dont know aobut you, but i'd gladly give up all three cups to stay in the premiership, sad as thats not the kind of way i like to think...

Glory Glory Tottenham Hotspur all the way. Couldn't give a shite if we got relegated if we won all those. Might swap a League Cup..... might..... nah I'd take the cup.
