Seeing as we've had a thread like this previous seasons we might as well have one now too.

This season will be pretty special I reckon, what with Fergie retiring from the manager position, Mourinho coming back to Chelsea, Pelligrini going to City and Arsenal not strengthening this far in the transfer window.

Our main competition for 4th (or higher) will be the same as last season: City, United, Chelsea and Arsenal. Liverpool may have an outside shot at the top 4 if the Suarez situation get settled (which I don't reckon it will be) and they get their defense sorted.

As far as transfers go, I'd say that we and City are the ones who have strengthened the most this far. City will most likely be up there challenging for the title if they can get their team to really click. With Nastasic, Kompany and Hart they've got a very solid defense and Yaya in the middle is probably the best midfielder in the league (or even in the world, he's just massive). Chelsea will be a threat too, with their excellent attacking three of Mata, Hazard and Oscar. Adding Schürrle and a strike force of Torres, Ba and Lukaku they will be dangerous too and Mourinho can probably get the most out of them.

United will be a bit of a question mark imo. Will they get through due to an experienced squad or will they fall from grace without Fergie? They're best players (RvP, Carrick, Vidic and Ferdinand) are all getting old and injuries may well hamper their season and with the Rooney situation they may have a bit of an unsettled squad. Will Moyes get them through?

Arsenal... jammy ****s. I'd hate to see us slip up one more time and lose 4th by one point. Last season their defense really stepped up and Koscielny and Mertesacker really seemed to click. Can't see Vermaelen having another dreadful season, but their fullbacks aren't really up to par with their central defense. And as usual they will be an attacking threat with Cazorla and Walcott. If Podolski and Giroud step up their game they've got a pretty good starting XI, but their squad lacks depth and with a few key injuries they may well be in a world of trouble if they don't strengthen.

As for Spurs, this is the time for us to really go at it. Soldado coming in is a real relief, we've added some massive depth in midfield and gotten rid of some surplus players and if the media and ITK got it right we may still count on new additions. A new LB, some creativity in midfield and that possible Bale replacement is what we need to really challenge. Possibly some more depth in the CB position, but if we can get a full season out of Kaboul and Vertonghen keeps on performing we're looking very solid at the back, especially with Lloris in goal. As it stands we've got two major goal scorers in Soldado and Bale, but hopefully Chadli can get a few goals too and I hope Siggy will live up to the quality we saw him have in Swansea, which could mean up to 10 goals from him, but I still reckon that we need another goalscorer for the front three (if AVB intend to play 4-3-3).

I firmly believe that United will not be the same force as they've been under Fergie and that they will struggle a bit this season, but still finish in the top 4. City and Chelsea will battle it out for the title, leaving us, Arsenal and United to fight for the top 4 and I believe we'll finish ahead of Arsenal this year.

COYS!

Been waiting for this thread for ages!! :)

Gonna be tough again. We look good on paper but it's what happens on the grass that really matters.

I can't see United slipping up all that much. I don't think they will win the title but they can put out a team every week that doesn't necessarily need an awe-inspiring manager. They have that blend of youth and experience and know how to turn up on a Saturday and get the 3 points.

Spurs, Arsenal and Liverpool to battle for 4th, although I think Liverpool will be more of a threat. They have shown some promise and just need to get some of their defensive organisation sorted out. A couple of key injuries to any team will obviously be bad news but it does seem like we are starting to win the "strength in depth" battle now.

Chelsea
City
United
Spurs
Liverpool
Arsenal

Just my onion.

PS. All based on current squads... eg. Bale and Suarez staying where they are.

Have been waiting for this thread :)

Hardest season to predict, but I feel it's chelsea and city fighting it out for 1 and 2. United 3rd and then anyone's game for 4th.

Think I'd agree with:

Chelsea
City
United
Spurs
Liverpool
Arsenal

SURELY it's this season that Arsenal don't make top4. They've recruited no-one of note, no-one wants to join them anymore and they've even lost a couple of players from their squad. Obviously there's still time for them to recruit, but most of the top players have already moved and anyone they buy now isn't going to gel into their system for a while.

Come on Soldado, start banging them in SON

Well we are getting down to that point again, the race for fourth V5.0

So, how better to start with with great insight from a pundit who gets paid millions to be a fucking idiot on sky
Jamie Redknapp said:
It might not be the kind of race that United and Liverpool fans are used to, but the battle for fourth spot and Champions League football could come down to the two great rivals.

Everton and Tottenham fans might disagree but, despite their ongoing struggles, sooner or later United will go on a run. Seven points is a big gap, but it’s not insurmountable.

Liverpool still have to go to Old Trafford and United can turn it around, particularly when Robin van Persie, Juan Mata and Wayne Rooney combine. There is absolutely no love lost between the clubs, so it will be a real test of nerve. Whatever happens, it will be a game-changer for either side.

Liverpool have been without Champions League football for three seasons now, so to get back in would be huge.

They could attract more players and increase the chances of hanging onto the likes of Luis Suarez for the long term.

For United, dropping out of Europe’s top competition is almost unthinkable. They have been in it since 1995 and the impact would be massive financially and for keeping their best players.
So this wanker thinks its only going to between two team because of their big players, the one who has struggled to score against the top 10 but destroyed the bottom 10 or the team with two guys who struggled with their fitness and 7 points behind Liverpool at the moment!

I'll cop a wall of noise for this but I reckon we're pushing brown stuff up a hill as it is. My prediction is we'll need 31 points from here onwards and personally I'm struggling to see how we'll manage that with the way we're playing.

Just personal opinion, fingers crossed that i'm wrong and I suppose we'll see soon enough

Coincidence - I think we'll get 75 points this season. That's 31 points away from now.

And without taking into account the Man City result (which was basically out of our hands), then we're unbeaten under Sherwood with only two draws in the league. I'd still say we're playing pretty well atm.

One thing that worries me is that I'm unsure whether 75 points would be enough for 4th.

It's horrible but i want Chelsea to get a point tonight, City & Chelsea go to Liverpool in games 34 & 36 right near the end if the season and we need them both to be in the league mix and having something vital to play for. We could also do with both of them getting knocked out if the CL by then.

I actually think 73 will do it!

What the weekend showed is even if we're not playing to our best and vulnerable to drop unexpected points - our rivals for fourth are equally capable of doing so

Beat Everton and it's very much game on - lose and if results go against us we're gonna struggle to stay in the race

Though of course the lack of consistency from our rivals means that even a lose is not the end- just makes it a very very tough task.

A win however will give us every chance

Well Utd fans are not feeling too confident, check the thread title out.

http://www.redcafe.net/threads/things-today-that-proved-moyes-is-an-idiot.383640/

No.7 is my favourite.

7) Ashley Young, who even when he plays well, looks shit, is the only attacking player other than Valencia who Moyes seems to trust enough to actually play consistently in a single position. When you think about that...is Moyes actually genuinely brain damaged?

Everton, Liverpool and Arsenal have all found some sort of consistency this season whilst us and Man Utd haven't.

Arsenal are now all bout guaranteed a top 4 place (though what I wouldn't give to see them do like we did and just go into free-fall).

Everton are proving that they can get results but I'd like to think their squad depth could be an issue plus how they do VS the big teams (as shown by when they played Liverpool) so I'd say we've got a good chance of coming above them.

Liverpool can are literally a Jekyl and Hyde team. Their attackers are frightful but their defence is shocking (as shown yesterday). We can take them but they have goal difference on their side.

Man Utd are so inconsistent that even with the boost of Mata there's so much expectation and disharmony in their team that I think we'd be able to come on top of them. I'm thankful we've played them twice as if they do finally kick it up a notch they'd be taking points off of our rivals rather than us.

It's all about how we do vs the big teams. With our injured players coming back I'd say we have a good chance. We're at a disadvantage as we have to go to the bridge and to anfield but our away form has been decent so we should be able to get some points from that.

Then there's the NLD which is just too unpredictable.

I think we've got a chance. I don't think it's the end of the world if we don't make it this year, I don't think it's jump ship territory just yet so if we do only come 5th I won't be TOO pissed (especially if we can have a decent go at the Europa league)

Oh how I'd love to beat them 5-2 in the NLD on route to dashing their CL dreams on the final day by beating them to fourth following our solid run and their collopse - pay back would indeed be a bitch

Never have I used the 'optimistic' rating more wholeheartedly!

I dunno if optimistic is really the right word for it - its more of a fantasy than an optimistic outlook of believing it will happen

But then back in the mind the gap year we all laughed at the Arsenal fans who said they would catch us from a position of being further behind us than we are them currently - so stranger things have happened (just not it Spurs's favour)

Every season at this point we are always ahead of our rivals for a CL spot whereas this season we are behind and playing badly.

Now I have been thinking for the past 2/3 days its over and it most probably is but we can still make it imo, it just means we need 7 points from Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal! Tough task of course but heres the run in for Arsenal and Liverpool Against us!

If we carry on playing like we do, there is no doubt its over but if this is finally the kick up the arse the squads needs like we give Arsenal every year before they over take us then who knows. Arsenal have a really tough next 5 games but if we are within 3 points of 4th place after the Liverpool match I think we can get it but we need to go on a run similar to 2010 when within a month we beat Arsenal, Chelsea and Man City!

We would need a different manager for this to work. Mourinho, Wenger and Rogers have too much experience over Sherwood to drop points against us.

Yes he beat Moyes but who doesn't?

I think its more likely that Man U will beat us to 5th than it is that we will beat either Liverpool or Arsenal to fourth this season

Looking at that gives me a little more confidence. Didn't realise Liverpool's next three games were away from home either. We need Southampton to take points off them on Saturday for sure though!

Its not quite over yet, but like you say we now have virtually zero margin for error, bar the Chelsea game IMO. We'll have to beat Arsenal and not lose at Anfield in all likelihood.

If we can't beat a really poor Cardiff team on Sunday, despite Thursday's games on top of it, we truly won't deserve it anyway.

We still have a slim chance, but we need to start getting our act together very quickly.
