Friedel - 6 - Ok the goal was a howler but should have been put in anyways, everything else he did pretty decent and saved 2 pens.

Walker - 6.5 - Nonstop running, what an engine he has. Good in defense, still learning in attack but solid as hell.
Kaboul - 8 - What a monster at the back.
Verts - 7 - Looked very good at CB and then dropped his level a bit at LB, but still good.
Naughton - 6 - Not good that he's injured, useful cover. Didn't play great going forwards but solid enough in defense and always was there for the back pass.

Paulinho - 7 - Ran all game, always supporting the attack and dropping back to help the defense.
Dembele - 5.5 - Thought he was invisible for large parts of the game, this is the type of game he could easily control. Came on a bit at the end but overall would expect/want a lot more.

Sigurdsson - 6 - Points for an amazing goal but didn't do much else in the 90 minutes. Was a bit more involved (naturally) when he was forced to play CAM. Almost scored a second.
Eriksen - 6 - Wasn't a bad game or anything but still feel he can play a lot better.
Lamela - 6 - Very good movement, always looking to get involved and moving to get other players open. Passed well but didn't offer too much himself going forwards. He had a good game though and he's close to making that breakthrough, saw 1 or 2 runs today reminding me of his Roma compilation vids on YouTube. Pen miss won't help confidence but at least we won.

Defoe - 4 - Jeez, offers nothing as a lone striker vs good teams. Great striker in a 442, useless alone (especially with how we play). He's trying, he's moving, just not working out vs EPL teams.

Chiriches - 6.5 - Solid enough, didn't have THAT much to do but did it well.
Chadli - 7 - Shame he had to come off so quick but I thought our best spell was when he was on for Eriksen.
Kane - 8 - Brilliant performance. Hope he gets a look in now, such an intelligent player, he's perfect for this side.

Well, my 'view' was 'slightly obscured' first half but thankfully I managed to er... 'teleport' to Brazil and watch a recorded version of the match in the last hour!

So yeah.

I'm gonna take the positive stance here but first the negative:

-Paulinho, Walker, Vertonghen and Dembele all played 120 minutes today.
Arguably none of them should have even have been used at all.
-Brad is everything Hugo isn't and the peno shoot-out was reminiscent of Italia '90 and Shilton falling towards the edge of the goal as penaliies whizzed past him.
-Naughton injured is even less full back cover.
-The Hull squad could walk past me in the street & i'd be oblivious to all bar Hudd & Jake. We struggled past them. Twice.
-Defoe. Just no.

Now the positive:

-Minutes for Lamela! OK he fucked up his peno but he got 120 mins on the pitch & he really needs them right now.
-These kinda results and experiences are good for group bonding. Losing would have been terrible for morale, now we go forward with smiles on faces to face West Ham.
-Kane. Broke the bar, broke the net with his peno and scored. Surely a better option than Defoe now?
-If, like me you're English, you may be happy to see the team you're supporting win a penalty shootout!
-Lloris, Dawson, Townsend, Holtby, Soldado, Sandro, Lennon (pfft) were rested, only really full back we look light for cover.
-Capoue on the bench! Yay! Kaboul on the pitch! Yay! I like these guys, you like these guys. We're good.
-Sigurdsson goal. Ripper.

So, yeah, completely unnecessary match but tantalisingly closer to potential silverware & the right result.

Ratings:

Friedel 5 Not good for either goal really
Naughton 5 Not sure?
Walker 7 Always trying
Kaboul 7 I like Kaboul
Vertonghen 7
Lamela 7 Still didn't do much but seemed to look more comfortable. Trying to link with the footballing intellect of Defoe is a hindrance after all.
Paulinho 6 Bit perfunctory, shouldn't have played
Dembele 6 Bit perfunctory, someone needs to shout at him about taking positive passing risks sometimes.
Eriksen 6
Sigurdsson 7 Just 'goal.'
Defoe 1 Hindrance
Chiriches 7 Brilliant as ever :)
Chadli -
Kane 8 Man of the match for thriving in a difficult situation. Good lad

AVB: Odd team selection, as ever. But let off as we're on our way to Wembley. ;)

Lamela 6 and then you give Walker 6.5 and Chadli a 7 who was on the pitch for 13 minutes?

Words fail me.

I'm not doing any ratings, I'll just post my vote.

Given my vote to Lamela who stood up to be counted with everyone getting on his back. Has to be good for him and today maybe he felt at home at the club. Impressive performance from Kaboul plus a really positive performance from Kane. A game to learn more from than the 4-0 thrashing of Villa earlier in the competition

Yeah I'm not sure about that, hard to choose a Motm after that and he did ok but Lamela... dunno. I'd probably give it to Kane, he seemed to have more effect on the game than anyone else in his time on the pitch. Or maybe Defoe just for the Lol'z

Just got home and it's midnight. I can't remember life not playing Hull. Everyone gets a 3 except Kane, Lamela and Kaboul.

Freidel 6 Good old Brad, held it together after the own goal

Walker 7 kept going as he always does this boy never hides, flawless defensively some poor attacking decisions as usual

Kaboul 9 Superb and my MOM was everywhere even getting a cross in just hope he stays fit and can contribute to our season

Vertonghen 7 great touch and composure as always

Naughton 6 Did'nt do a lot wrong, didn't do a lot TBH but its not his fault he just isn't 2 footed

Paulinho 6 Good first 30 mins faded as the game went on. Just get the feeling he doesn't want to get his shorts dirty when the going gets tough

Dembele 6 flitted in and out of the game, should be more of a leader that his talent deserves

Lamela 6 Not a lot ran for him tonight, can't fault him for his spirit and endeavour. Played some incisive passes as the game opened up.

Eriksen 5 Very poor, bullied out of things and final balls off key. disappointing after showing good promise against Norwich

Siggy 7 Great strike and some good passes

Defoe 5 Poor touch, poor shooting, Poor decisions a bad game

Chadli 6 looked bright and strong when he came on then got subbed presumably injured

Chiriches 6 Lost his man for the corner, showed good urgency and spirit

Kane 8 Did well, chuffed he scored after hitting the woodwork could be our plan B for a bit of muscle up top

Team rating 7 Started brightly, knocked the ball about well for the first 30 minutes without creating a single chance. As the game transitioned tactically we looked vulnerable by the direct quick tempo posed by Hull and didn't really ever gain back control in the 90 minutes.

Extra time continued much in the same vain, but as we fell behind and had to be more direct we were a lot more effective I hope AvB has taken note of this for the future. Sometimes its better to cede a little control for a bit more punch at home. For away games the possession game is perfect.

I can't control Chadli getting injured. His introduction brought about our best 10 minutes of offense and he got a lot of positive touches in that time, so he gets a 7.

Walker had a solid game, he was beaten a few times, won the ball a lot, ran around a ton, his attacking play still isn't great but it's getting there, hence the 6.5

As I said, Lamela is close to breaking through but I don't see what he did today to warrant a high rating. I like him and have a lot of patience but he played a lot of passes, dribbled horizontally, and missed a pen. Not sure why he should be higher than Chadli, Lamela was decent and shows a lot of promise but he didn't exactly standout tonight.

I thought Chadli looked positive too but I don't see how his half a dozen okay touches shades 120 minutes of grade from Erik.

If it wasn't for the greediness of Defoe or poor touches of others, he would of most likely had an assist or a goal.

He was definitely carrying us as an attacking threat in periods during the second half and notably the early periods of extra time.

I'm not dismissing your onion as it's yours... I just wanted the reasoning and now I've got it!

FWIW, Kaboul was brilliant and amazed he stick it out for the full length.

Friedel 4 - Saved 2 vital but poor pens, 1 decent stop in the 1st half but committed an horrific howler for the own goal and stayed on his line for every single cross that came into the box. Not good enough, time to collect his zimmer frame and head for the exit door.

Walker 6 - Defended well enough, gave us the usual dose of passing the ball to the opposition and had constant brain farts when attacking ... run, stop and pass the ball backwards.

Kaboul 8 - MOM, Very good, solid performance and showed great energy all the way through to the end.

Vertonghen 7 - Like Kaboul he defended well but looked knackered in extra time.

Naughton 6 - Don't recall him doing anything bad which is unusual and he played a decent ball to Sig which lead to the goal.

Dembele 6 - Composed and stamps his authority on central midfield, unfortunately he only does this for a few minutes at a time and then goes walkabout.

Paulinho 7 - Sure this guys on something ... gave 110% all game, ran himself into the ground.

Eriksen 5 - Don't know if he's low on confidence or the fact that he had to play off Mr Invisible ... concerning how he's dropped off the pace the last few games.

Sigurdsson 6 - Scored a screamer then went on holiday.

Lamela 6.5 - MIA in the 1st half, but played well in the 2nd half. Made some good runs, nice passing interchange and unlucky not to score from his free kick. I hope the penalty miss hasn't knocked his confidence.

Defoe 2 - Scored a pen, other than that he was utter horse sh*t. Always offside, can't hold the ball up, horrid 1st touch, dives/falls over when brushed by a defender, terrible attempts on goal, and instead of running into space when we're attacking, he either stands there or runs towards the player with the ball because he wants it all for himself. Hope we replace him in Jan, if not ... promote Kane in his place in the cup games/bench in the prem.

Chiriches 6 - Defended well enough with only a minute of looking lost. Settling well into the side.

Chadli 5 - Erm, came on, went off.

Kane 8 - A close 2nd for my MOM (Kaboul), showed great strength on the ball, composed and took his goal very well. Also, very unlucky with the screamer that smashed against the bar. Move over Defoe, there's a new kid on the block.

Kaboul edged MOM for me. Finally some pace at the back. Showed how much we miss him.

Kane did very well and must be the new 1st choice in attack when Soldado isn't playing. A star is born = Canis Major (sorry :geek:).

Marathon Man

I really enjoyed the first hour of this game. This game was very different to the league game, in that we took much better care of the ball and for that first hour our movement was better than Sunday and we zipped the ball about very nicely at times and some of our approach play was really good to watch.

I think Hull are one of the best teams - without the ball - I've seen at WHL this year, they really worked their nuts off to limit chances. Absolutely gash without the ball mind you and but for Friedel wouldn't have come close to troubling the scoreboard.

The game changed when AVB swapped Eriksen for Chadli. If Eriksen is being conserved for the weekend then fair enough, otherwise this was another AVB sub that did not improve us.

Eriksen tonight had put in one of those Modric type performances, just 30 yards further forward, constantly keeping the ball revolving, popping up here and there, giving and going. And while he was on there was a fluency to our play.

We still were finding it hard to create against this team, bar a beautiful piece of skill from Sigurdsson, but for that first hour or so, and especially in the first half, there was a much better rhythm to our play than a few days ago, much less error strewn, people moved better, and passes zipped that tiny bit quicker.

Then things started to go a bit awry. The injury to Naughton saw Vertonghen shuffled across, and Chiriches come on. Chadli went off almost immediately to be replaced by Kane. Sigurdsson and Lamela swapped. Paulinho faded then came back into the game. We continued to dominate most of the ball, but the fluency started disappearing gradually, Hull went 442 huffed a bit more, had a couple moments and took advantage of our old, tubby line limpet.

It always used to amaze me that ManU could seem to dig victory from seemingly shit situations time and time again. That took 5 years to instil. Everyone said last year Bale was digging us out, but it's not Bale. One of the many things AVB is bringing to this group is belief and a never give in attitude. Great qualities. Ones that most Spurs fans won't recognise, and who could blame them.

I feel for Lamela, neither he nor Townsend are providing much end product, but Townsend is just looking more eye catching doing (or not) it. He's not hiding, trying to get involved and as the game went on he seemed to get more confident. Still didn't produce much of substance though. Needs time I guess, luckily Townsend is buying him that (he just better hope that Townsend doesn't start producing actual stuff).

It would be lovely if we could start taking marking at set pieces seriously.

Individual ramblings:

Friedel - Like watching your dad dance at a wedding. His penalty saves only redeeming the two goals he'd cost us.

Walker - The boy runs a lot. The boy tries extremely hard. The boy does some really stupid things. Quite often. When that pace goes, what's left ?

Kaboul - decent knock.

Vertonghen - OK.

Naughton- OK

Chiriches - The boy can clearly play football. And sometimes defends really well, but needs to work on his risk/decision making. Pretty sure he lost his man for the corner goal as well.

Paulinho - Worked fucking hard tonight. Best you can say.

Dembele - Same as Paulinho.

Sigurdsson - Wonderful spin and goal. First half was bright and part of the good build up. Faded second half and got a bit wayward. Finished the game OK.

Eriksen - I thought he was very metronomic tonight and we looked different almost as soon as he went off. Nothing earth shattering, just continual recycling of the ball and intelligent movement

Lamela - Worked hard enough. All our creatives struggled to make anything happen - both games - against Hull, and he was no exception.

Defoe - At his irritating worst tonight. We got the full gamut. Weak in possession, wasting situations, greedy, getting in the way of others, and getting himself stupidly offside.

Kane - I'm pretty sure his future doesn't lie with us, but really pleased for the kid to get his goal.

Just looking at the positives tonight :

Younis Kaboul - Fanntastic performance from start of the match to scoring a penalty at the end. , A rock for the side. If he can keep fit, this is a great standard to come back at. MOTM by a mile.

Harry Kane - On for the last 15 minutes of normal time and the 30 minutes of extra time, but did more inn that time than Defoe and several other players in the full 120 minutes. Almost broke the cross bar with a great shot before a far more composed placed shot to score the equaliser. Then kept composed to score a penalty. He's come on leaps and bounds over the last couple of seasons - IMO he's ready now to become a realistic starter in EL and cup competitions and a bench option for PL. Perfect cameo appearance - if he had played more think he would be MOTM jointly with Kaboul..

Erik Lamela - average first half but far better in the second half and extra time, unfortunately semed to lose his confidence for the penalty. Certainly his best performance for Spurs to date - still need to improve to get to the level he was at Roma but hopefully he can build on this performance. Far from the best player on the pitch but so much better than previous performances
A few players like Vertonghen also stood out, don't think there were any really bad performances.

I literally just got home now

Can't even think straight to write full ratings but I will vote for Kane for an all round impressive performance with a well taken goal and penalty and a thunderbolt that rattled the bar

I've been something of a critic of his so its only fair to praise him when he does the business and tonight we'd. Be eliminated without him so that's enough for me to give him the MOTM award
