We're running out of options particularly if Cancelo is off. We can't afford to wait around as much as we can with other positions. We should really be looking to seal Toljan by next week if we think he's good enough.

Cancelo is off.

I can handle missing out on forward and midfield players, you can argue (tough argument, but you can) that GKN and Janssen will be good now that they've adjusted.

The RB situation is clown college, though. No big club should be in this position.

Like an ambitious Liverpool, who in truth have no financial restrictions over transfers, playing James Milner at LB virtually all year.
Rightly or wrongly, sometimes a manager just decides to go with what he has rather than buy for the sake of it.

Why did this one fall through in the first place? Surely it can't have been the fee, if he genuinely does have a 25m Euro release clause, as that's nothing in the current market.

Not the fee, per se...3rd party ownership has apparently made things tricky.

How many times have we heard this before about potential targets?

Surely we should do out research long before the window and if he has third party issues it's vetoed immediately?

We sent a scout to a Porto game. How is that even news? (Not having a go at you btw).

That's ok. Surely we aren't still scouting him though. We must be bidding for him again now. There's no other options that we've been linked with!

In truth I don't think they are 100% off either, as none have joined other clubs yet. I think it's just a bit of posturing to get the price down, likewise with Barkley and Lopez. I wouldn't be stunned at all to see all four join late in the window. But I just wonder what saving a couple of million in the grand scheme of things (admittedly not my money, so why would I care), what difference would it make to pay up and get the squad in and up to speed during preseason, rather than try to integrate after the season has started.

Whilst we are not Man City, Utd or Chelsea, equally we are not short of cash, and already £45m to the good after the initial Walker deal. Based on Walker, Fazio and Njie deals being announced this summer, plus Carroll in January, that's roughly £60m+ in credit currently, and does Bentaleb's sale also fall into this window? If so, that's approximately £80m, enough to buy Pereira (£20m), Foyth (£10m), Barkley (£25-30m) and Lopez (£3m) and still have money left over. Throw in a potential Sissoko fee, and there's enough left over to bring in the 3rd attacker fans crave, and still probably have cash left to reallocate to contract extensions etc.

Probably a very simplistic view, but then there's a reason I'm not a football chairman.

All seems reasonable to me. I think you should apply for a job as football chairman

Did Pogba, Mkhitaryan and Ibrahimovich strengthen Utd. last season? They scraped into CL by the back door I know, but they weren't really very good. My theory is that big signings are a double bladed sword which can increase footballing ability but weaken team mentality. Overall, I think we're doing equally well on both fronts which is the key to our success.

Different model to us. They can afford to buy players for sporting as well as marketing purposes.... which is why they were prepared to cough up so much for Pogba

I still think this one is a no brainier.
For the sort of money we could realistically get for Sissoko (based on rumours Marseille were looking at around £20m), we could get this guy. Pace to burn, comfortable at RWB and RW, the two roles we're talking about Sissoko covering, but with more ability on the ball, and also covers LWB, which allows Davies to also be considered for LCB in a 3 of required. Given Pereira covers a few positions, there's still opportunities for Walker-Peters.
Fingers crossed. Sanchez, Barkley, Pereria and maybe a WF/CF would be an outstanding end to the window. May be a bit much to ask for, but we live in hope.

Who said the scout was there to watch Pereria? Jesús Corona also plays for Porto and would fit what we're looking for in a RWF. He's also very marketable and Levy loves that.

Clever.

He can be marketed to the religious types using his first name and then to the party types with his 'beer' second name.
