My first post on here, might be my last. I started following the fortunes of Tottenham Hotspur FC in 1961. Jim joined just after. Why? He was joining the best team in England. Blanchflower, Mackay, Smith, White, Jones, Norman, Brown, Baker, Henry, what's not to like? Seems like yesterday, but it isn't. RIP Jim, thanks for the memories.

You'll be hard pressed to find supporters of other clubs that have a bad word for Jimmy Greaves.

Unfortunately, I never saw him play as I was 10 years of age when Jimmy left West Ham United. Over the following years I've read numerous books on the great man, watched every clip I could find of him in his player days. The man was pure elegance on the pitch and very funny in his latter television days.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Jimmy later on. When Bobby Moore was in charge of my local club Southend United, Jimmy would pop across from his insurance/travel business near the Nelson pub to talk with Bobby while the team were training in the park near Roots Hall. I'd watch the lads training, Jimmy's son Danny was with the Shrimpers then. Having overcome being awestruck with his presence, I plucked up the courage to speak to him. He was very friendly and lovely to speak with.

Some years later my son played against Jimmy's grandson who was a goalkeeper in the local South East Essex junior league. Once again Jimmy was on good terms with father's of our team who all wanted a little word with a geniune legend.

Also, met him at Morbec Farm in Wickford which was his sports outlet where everyone would kit out their junior teams. The kids with us had to be told who Jimmy was but the father's and grandfather's were thrilled with Jimmy's presence.

Classy touch by @Rob and the team to make this banner.

Nice one.

Very special. I hope it stays till he is buried.

What terribly sad news. Jimmy was my boyhood idol and I was privileged to see him play and to witness his incredible goal-scoring feats. His 4 goals against Notts Forest, his much-viewed classic against Man U, his truly brilliant individual effort against Leicester. The list goes on. One of the true legends.

Rest in Peace Jim. it was an honour and a privilege to see you play. Thanks for all the wonderful memories.

The favourite (non family) person of my seventy year life has gone. A bit hard to deal with. For those interested, it might be worth looking out for Norman Giller’s next blog on Spurs Odyssey.

Norman’s comments. Worth reading as they’ve been very close for decades.

Utterly baffling there’s no statue of him or Bill Nic. The south podium couldn’t be a more perfect place. Staggering was not included in the build.

Yep. My bad. I'd already posted a "respectful" post about Jim earlier in the thread, but the "performance" yesterday (not unexpected) really got to me, and I linked it to the similar effort on the day Sir Bill passed away. Just so frustrated with everything and fury got the better of me. Apologies.

I'd like to wager a bet there will be no statues at the stadium - I expect it's part of ENIC's plan to promote it as a multi-purpose stadium and not to identify with one particular sport per se (which kind of tells you how ENIC view the club). Crying shame to be honest; almost as shameful as England's greatest striker only receiving a paltry MBE!!
