Sherwood's tactical naivety!

I'm not sure if anyone else has noticed - but under Sherwood recently the team ONLY attack down the flanks. The is no effort to pass it about in and around the center circle, win the midfield battle or play short pass and move football through the middle.

Every single time we get the ball, we shuffle it out wide and try to play around the opposition. The fact that we NEVEr mix up this tactic makes totally and utterly predictable and easy to defend against.

We only ever threaten through the middle when the ball happens, by chance, to break loose to a player in central midfield.

Today, against Benfica there were times when we were on the attack but didn't have single player within 30 yards of the centre circle. Even when we were running into dead ends out wide and Paulinho, in acres of space in the middle was begging for the ball, we chose not to play it to him centrally.

We did the exact same thing against Dnipro until they went a man down. The obsession with wide play is so extreme that rather than our CBs playing as a central unit - we actually have to pairings on either flank - the LB and left CB play as one unit, the Right CB and RB play as another unit and we leave a gaping hole down the middle.

You win football matches by gaining control of midfield, being willing to play it about in the middle under pressure from opponents - the opposition then have to commit players to the middle of the pitch to compete for the ball, that creates space out wide that can then be exploited. But unless you are willing to man-up and tell your players to pass it about in the middle of the pitch rather than shying away from the midfield battle and poking about predictably down the wings on EVERY possession there will never be any space to exploit on the flanks. In fact we were so "width obsessed" today that Benfica's central midfielders were able to come out wide when needed and help the wide players double up on us, as by 60 minutes in, it was obvious to them that even if there was space in the middle, we were simply not even going to try and play the ball through central midfield.

I fail to see how Sherwood can be so naive to, week after week, send the side out with instructions to only attempt to attack down the flanks and to make no attempt to play football in the middle of the park. I'm not a Sherwood hater, but the way he is sending the team out to play is tactical suicide and IMO shows he is massively tactically naive and not up to the job.

He knows he's well out of his depth. He needs to develop his management skills over the next couple of years but not managing us, perhaps as coaching staff learning off the next incumbent to the hot seat

He knows he's fucked and will be replaced, I can see him making so crazy, stupid selections/decisions in the coming weeks cause he's nothing to lose.

it doesnt help all our central options are pretty average tbh

they keep the ball well enough but they can do fuck all with it, which is why it finds itself going wide most of the time

god i miss modric and vdv :(

As much as I agree, and I'm welcome to correction, but didn't we only lose once in 18 games in Europe under AVB (against inter in 2nd leg, not including the 2-2 draw with Basel that we lost on penalties in QF)

The centre of midfield and the wings need additions and exits over the summer.not to mention left back and new cb

I think that ship has sailed now. He has his own ideas and has tried to leave his mark on the team. He would be much better off getting out in the world than being put in his place by the no nonsense LvG.

Oh and anyone who drops a low on confidence striker after he scores a goal needs to be put through a wall

Bit in bold, has been the case since at least the days of Jol.

With respect, I disagree - in Sandro we have a top class defensive / ball winning centre mid, in Paulinho we have a top rate box to box midfielder, and in Eriksen, we have a top rate attacking centre mid. The simple fact is we do not even attempt to play football in midfield - we make no effort to get the ball to players in the middle of the park, make no effort to win the midfield battle - we intentionally abdicate control of the midfield and try and play around the opposition out wide. But by NEVER mixing it up and trying to drag opposition players into the middle of the park to fight us for control of midfield there is no space to exploit on the flanks - its not a lack of quality players, it a complete lack of any tactical nouse in the way Sherwood instructs the team to play :(

You're right, I get the notion he would rather be giving orders as boss

Erikssen could easily play the VDV / Modric role and Paulinho has enough about him creatively IMO.

Agreed - again, its not that we don't have the quality players - its the way Sherwood is setting the team up to play that is killing us...

He simply does't get that 4-4-2 is an outdated, obsolete tactial system that simply cannot compete against the fluid combination of "4-5-1 defense / 4-3-3 attack model" that EVERY top team now plays.

It's like we need a hybrid of Sherwood and AVB. Tactically astute but with a bit of swagger, how about van Gaal?

Van Gaal would never make it past the first season - if you look at his long career - he has never has made an immediate impact and had success in his first season or two - it takes him 2-3 years for him to get the team to adapt and play his to philosophy successfully - and at Spurs he would simply not be given the time to do that - sad, but its the truth!

It's not the formation, it has nothing to do with the fact we play 4-4-2 as we have looked equally as inept playing different formations, it's the instructions given to the players. We have no chemistry or cohesion and rely on individual brilliance, mistakes or set pieces.
