In a way we've also been very lucky. This is actually the last season where the weakest English qualifier will still make the Europa League. From next year, they will instead get a place in the Playoff round of the new third-tier tournament, the Europa Conference League. Which features a group stage full of teams nobody's ever heard of, likely very little prize money, just as many games as the Europa League, and if you win the whole thing you only get a spot in the proper Europa League the season after for your efforts rather than the Champions League. UEFA's very own version of the Carabao Worthington's Milk Cup.

Don’t think I could correctly pronounce a single team on this list.

Let’s hope we get drawn as the home team.

I was about to say that you made those names up and/or they're anagrams of genuine teams. Then I saw the last name on your list and changed my mind, as I'm actually in Heraklion as I write!

Unbelievable. What a fuckin joke that is, especially given Premier League clubs’ success in the competition in recent seasons. They still don’t get placed directly in the group stage either?!? Banter :ROFLMAO:

I can’t believe I haven’t heard about this. You would think UEFA would just focus on building up the legitimacy of the Europa league before starting a whole new tier of the competition.

I’d imagine the PL big 6 clubs will likely be sending their U23s if they’ve got to play in the Europa League 2..

The big 6 Premier League clubs will surely be sending their U23s to play in that.
This is sort-of about trying to build up the Europa League. They're reducing it down to 32 teams, increasing the average qualify by shafting most of the total nonsense including these silly qualifying rounds down into the 3rd-tier tournament, and making the Group Stage more meaningful by letting the group winners skip the 1st Knockout Round where the 2nd-place teams will face the dropouts from the CL groups. But the PL is a bit of a victim of that because we have 6 such big teams unlike any other country, and therefore will often send someone very good into the 3rd-tier mess. I think it's a decent idea on the whole, but I agree you'll certainly see any big English clubs playing the youth in that one.

Basically since the Europa is getting smaller in an attempt to make it better, the best countries are only getting 2 places rather than 3, with the 3rd becoming a consolation prize they reallllly don't want.

And for anyone still uncertain, UEFA have produced a helpful video clarification of the format (y)

Football is so messed up! How can we have teams consisting of players like: Carrick, Bale, VDV, Modric, Verts, Toby, Walker, Rose, Dembele, Eriksen, Dele, Kane, Son and Loris and none of them have a Spurs trophy to their name yet that shower of a team from Woolwich with their worst team in decades get a trophy.

Not sure where to post this, but even us Spurs fans should applaud Arsenal Goalkeeper Martinez after that emotional interview live on BBC1 - he really showed how important that win was for them, top professional.

For some reason I had it in my head that we would have to come back early for these games. The prem starts on the 12th and these games begin on the 17th.

It's annoying but not a huge deal. We have to get our back up striker in though.

In the greater scheme of things, 3 extra matches, at least 2 of which will be against sides who’d struggle in league 2, shouldn’t hinder us across the season, especially given the lack of league cup matches for all European competitive sides. If anything we might find some rhythm and sharpness a bit earlier than we otherwise would have.

That sounds more like a punishment than a competition. They should put clubs who break FFP in it.

Let's hope it forces us to do all our transfers early.... I still doubt it though.
