Bit of a cruise in second gear really.

Seen enough of Vinicius to see he’ll be an effective option. Coupled with Hojbjerg and Reguilon, good to see the new boys finding their feet.

We still give away too many needless free kicks near our box. Need to be so conscious of it, considering we can’t defend set pieces.

Downside, Lamela has taken about 50 too many touches that half and Doherty continues to look a bit pants.

Winks is really not making a good case for himself. Looks nervous and is playing loose pass after loose pass.

He has put some good passes in as well
3 miss placed passes.

After a nervous and twitchy first 16-18 minutes, we've been capable, without being scintillating. The commentators keep talking about us "being in third gear", but I'm not sure how many more gears this starting 11 has.

Højbjerg has been our best player, with Sanchez and Lucas also impressing. No one has been bad, although Doherty is starting to develop a habit of wasting good positions. Hart looks like a proper goalkeeper.

Lucas is one of those players who has games where he is simply unplayable, followed by three games where he is industrious and a bloody nuisance, but nothing quite comes off for him.

There were more signs of the waiting-for-the-whistle panics at the end of that half, going into our shell and playing panicky passes. There are still mental-strength issues to deal with in this squad.

I can see why Vinicius got a hatful of assists in Portugal. Obviously not just a target man. That was an extremely, deceptively skilful pass for Lucas' goal.

Lamela's personal besetting sin is hanging onto the ball too long.

Good, not great, with some good-to-watch midfield play. Let's see if we throw this one away.

He really does need a lot more minutes. I don't think he'll be in full flow until after the next international break.

Which would be nice timing for that tough run of the games starting with City.
Yeah definitely not saying he isn't worth the loan etc.

I just think I need to revise my expectations of him - I think that burst of pace could have completely gone. I was still hoping to see him pace someone, albeit not as explosive as he was before.

Love the fact we can properly celebrate goals with the absence of VAR.

Overall very solid first half. Lucas touches are "brazilianly" fantastic in this half!

I’m having to watch this on Univision, a Spanish language channel here in the US. My Spanish is ok. The commentators are slagging the ref and linos off big time! They said that LASK player should have got two reds.

Got to remember Doherty is finding his feet here still. He's having to get used to be effective in a back four not 5. He may be a little rusty.

I thought Doherty looked good, Davies and Sanchez too. PEH playing like it's the world cup final.

Winks has been a bit rash, his tackling has been appalling. Lucas blowing hot and cold as usual.

Lamela pissing about on the ball too often.
Bale and Vinny showing glimpses.

Best summary of the first half here.

I expect some will disagree but I expect more from Bale, even if he was at 50%. Early days to jump to any conclusions but a player of his quality should be putting his stamp on the game regardless if he is lacking some match fitness.

Definitely wouldn't be rushing to start him come Monday

To my memory he would quite often drift in and out of games, but then inevitably pop up with a couple of worldies.

We’ll have to wait until he’s fully up to speed, but even if he’s lost that burst of pace, the class is still there.

Dont buy that. He is not a naive 18 year old, he is a seasoned Premier League full back. Mitigate it all you want, he is what you see
