Two goalkeepers on the bench again. Unbelievable. Ange is awesome in so many ways but this pettiness is always going to be something that really pisses me off.
He's not going to play them either way so is it that big a deal?

It's gives them the experience of being with the first team on match day regardless of them playing or not, it could also give them a spring in their step if they keep getting called up or called up for the first time. There's absolutely no downside to it.

Ange seems like the sort of person who doesn't just hand first-team call-ups to so maybe in his eyes no one deserved it.

Plenty of youth players have joined in first-year training this season other than the youth players who we've seen either play or be on the bench in recent weeks, and I doubt Ange won't have used them as training cones like Conte did, so it seems odd he hasn't included them to have that first-team match experience.

I don’t think it’s pettiness but it is frustrating.

Im not really sure who the other guy would be? Nile John? Sess?

either way - 3rd keeper is cray cray
Why put Nile John on the bench when he has done nothing to deserve it. I think the reason he doesn’t put youth on the bench unless they deserve it is that they might think they have made it when they get on the bench. It’s not a case of “ it’s your turn” to sit on the bench. There will no doubt be a monetary advantage to being in a match day squad. The 3 youth on the bench deserve it by their performances in under 21.
Earn a place is the message .
Unfortunately for those lads there will probably be no space when the international tournaments finish by mid Feb.

Apart from getting it into their head that they are in the first team squad When they are nowhere near.

I'll ask again, who else do people think he should be putting on the bench?
Who else do you think deserves a spot and is close to breaking into the first team?

It's easy to complain but if the options aren't there, he doesn't really have much choice unless he's giving 1st team bench spots away for free.

Yeah I don't think that's how it works. And if they do start to think like that then it'll weed out the ones with the incorrect mentality.

Haven't Man U got two keepers on their bench too?
Have we got anyone else who's worthy of a bench place at the moment?
Or should we just be sticking people on there for the sake of it?
What do you disagree with here @coy-spurs1882 ?
I don't normally ask for clarification on disagrees and stuff because it's usually fat fingers but this one has me intrigued.

Well we've already had itk saying that some of the youngsters aren't happy that they haven't got game time, that them and their agents have been a bit vocal about it.
Do we need the next level down getting ideas above their station too?

If 18 year old players are getting uppity because they're not getting game time, while we're actually doing pretty well, do we need to be weeding them out too?

If the manager and coaches think they are ready, they'll be in the picture.

Utter nonsense. It’s an away game at the other end of the country, two players pulled out of the team at very short notice.

Unless you expect them to take 5 or 6 youth players out of this weekends u18 and u21 matches just to have a nice day out on the bus in case the players already on the bench are taken ill?

But that would be bonkers, so I refer you to my first two words.

Nile John has been performing pretty consistently for the U21s and has been training with the first team lately. But I suspect the problem on this occasion was late withdrawals from players who had already travelled.

To me the players who really deserve a call up are Soonsup-Bell and Lyons-Foster (I’m not sure what the latter’s eligibilty position is during the window).

Given how it is going with injuries I’m not sure it’s a given we will have more players available as the season progresses.

maybe he wants it to be seen as a huge achievement and something you have to earn to drive them to keep imporving rather than just do it because he has no other options.

We've been there before with Poch. The whole youth system broke down.

Or have the youths just not been good enough?

Who from our youths has come through after we let them go/left that have gone on and done really well? There won't be many who are good enough still for our level.

Edwards is the only one I can think of, but there was talk of attitude problems I think? So can see why we didn't give him his chance I guess.

I think Madueke is one we could have done with keeping. In a less dysfunctional club I think he would be doing very well in the prem always looks dangerous and has a great strike on him.

Those are years of development, they don't just automatically reach their potential after leaving us, how good they become is largely determined of how we nurture them between age 17-21.
If we fail them, not being impressive later on is not proof that they weren't talented enough.

European clubs realized that England dominated in younger age group, but that the player development stopped around 18yo as players didn't get first team football. Hence, why they started to sign English prospects.
